About the Portable Document Format

- [Instructor] So let's establish right away that PDF stands for Portable Document Format. The PDF format has been around since 1993 and was originally created as a format for distributing and displaying documents so they actually looked like what the document creator intended. And this was accomplished in part by allowing the original fonts and graphics to be embedded in the document itself, which allowed for viewing and printing. Before the PDF format, you can never be sure what fonts were installed on someone else's computer. So if you sent, say a Microsoft Word document to someone, if they didn't have the same fonts that you used, the document could look drastically different. And these days with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software, you can view PDFs on Macs, Windows machines, as well as Android and iOS mobile devices. The PDF format became an open standard in 2008.
