I love my job. How do I keep it from taking over my life?
- Of course, an ideal career is one that lets you do what you love most. In fact, I believe loving what you do is a key to long-term success. The hazard, though, is that you work longer than healthy hours, perhaps even without realizing it. While it may feel okay to do because you're still happy, it's not a sustainable system. One solution is to use reminders such as an alarm that tell you when it's time to stop. This is where that scheduled transition time I mentioned comes in handy. Perhaps the best solution is a natural barrier or appointment that forces you to stop. Perhaps you have a daily meeting with a friend to go running at a certain time each day. For me, when my kids were younger, it was the time they came and knocked on my door. Create some sort of external barrier that reminds you. Even if you love what you do, maintain a balanced time budget. The breaks you take are just as essential to your success as…
