- Dr. Moravian, a psychology professor and researcher, noticed that 93% of a meaning of a message comes across in non-verbals. That means the tone of voice and body language are the main criteria we're being judged on. People are listening with their eyes and with their heart a lot more than they do with their ears. Because the non-verbals matter so much, let's break them down from our head to our toes. The first thing you want to think about is warm eyes. Maintain respectful and comfortable eye contact if you're in front of the person and in the camera if you're speaking on video chat. Looking at both eyes at once is not possible, so go for the left gaze bias, which means, looking at the person's right eye. If staring too long makes you uncomfortable, try taking three to five seconds as a pause, and look up as if you're thinking about what you'll say next or what you just heard.
