Looking at line weight

- Even if you are completely new to drafting, I think you intuitively understand that by varying the thicknesses of each line, we can emphasize certain portions of the drawing while de-emphasizing others. But the process of varying line thicknesses is far from random, there's a certain science to it. And it's quite deliberate. Typically, this is referred to as line weight. Any drawing ought to have between three and four line weights and vary from thick to thin. The primary goal is readability and clarity, to emphasize certain items while de-emphasizing others. Now there are standards out there that attempt to codify line weight information. One such standard is the US National CAD standard. This one is focused primarily on professionals like architects and engineers, but there are other standards that exist.
