- Design is a business. Seems obvious, no? But, for many, it's not obvious. If you run your creative firm, I bet that you want to create and avoid anything to do with the pesky business side of running a business, including managing a team. Before we can dig deeper into your role as the firm's leader and work on your organizational structure, I'd like to introduce my proprietary maturity model, indicating the four levels of benchmarks of a principal's involvement in their business. This model will help you, as your firm's leader, evaluate your current responsibilities and plan out your future role. The first is the tactical level. Here, the principal is usually involved with all projects at all levels, including managing clients and projects, hands-on design, and actually doing the work rather than directing others.
