- To some degree or another, the firm's principal usually has to function as both the leader and manager of their practice. Yet, few creatives understand the different skills required to be a leader versus a manager. And usually, we're good in one of these areas, but not both. Have you heard the expression, a fish rots from the head down? Essentially, if the head or leader stinks, so to speak, so will the rest of the organization. In my consulting practice, I've often found that the principal is either the root cause or a contributing factor to many of the firm's challenges, and obviously can't be fired. In looking at the role of the principal, and where you can improve or grow, we need to start by understanding the vital difference between leadership and management.
