- Check-ins are important, but they don't replace yearly performance reviews, which are more formal opportunities to review the last 12 months and set goals for the year ahead. Of course, these yearly reviews are also an opportunity to discuss any salary or promotions if they're relevant. Now, let's learn when and how to conduct these performance reviews. First, reviews should be in your calendar and initiated by the principal or manager. Don't forget or postpone these conversations. Your staff will feel as if they don't matter. Your team shouldn't be put in the position to ask for their review or raise. That's not their job. It's yours. Conducting performance reviews at the end of the year is exhausting and time-consuming, and it can be expensive to assume the cost of all raises concurrently.
