- Visual management is common in our everyday world, but not in our manufacturing and office environments. Too often, we must go talk to somebody to know what is going on. Are we ahead? Are we behind? Are we better than yesterday? Are we better than last month? One of the core competencies of Lean is visual management, sometimes referred to as visual control. It is a method to assess the status of any operation or area with little or no knowledge of the process and be able to make a determination of the status in moments. Visual management includes any information displays, labels, signs, color coding, or other markings. A kanban board in an office or an out of stock card on an inventory shelf are two examples of visual management. It is also important to define what visual controls are not.
