- Have you ever been trained for something only to realize that it didn't prepare you for the real thing? This can happen when training relies on massed practice, when you're given all of the examples of one problem or situation before moving on to the next. After several examples, you're starting to feel really good at solving the problems and working through the examples. You've got this. But this massed practice won't help prepare you for meaningful, long-term learning. Back at the office, you must both solve the problem and also know what the problem is. Here's an example. Think back to a math class you took. You may have learned many different types of problems with triangles like Pythagorean Theorem, area of triangles, similar triangles, trigonomic functions, and rise over run. With massed practice, you're always implicitly told which strategy to use, but on the test you may not have known how to even get started.…
