- [Rick] In this video, we'll learn what a software defined data center is, and we'll also have a very brief discussion of what the cloud is. So the ESXi hosts are essentially the building blocks of my software defined data center. I can have many ESXi hosts with many virtual machines, and those ESXi hosts will have physical network adapters and give network access to my VMs. They'll have connections to storage hardware and provide volumes for those virtual machines so that they can install operating systems and applications. And all of that stuff kind of put together here creates my software defined data center. I can have a bunch of hosts, I can have many hosts running on each virtual machine, and I can have all these physical components, networking and storage components underneath the surface that I require.
