- [Rick] In this video, I'll explain how snapshots can be used to create a point in time picture of a virtual machine. So here in this diagram, we see a running virtual machine. And let's say that we need to perform some sort of update on the operating system of this virtual machine. And because the VM is powered on, there are contents of memory. There are pages that are stored in the memory of the operating system. And there's also data stored on the virtual disc. So when we take a new snapshot, a new file is created called the VMSN file. So here's our VMSN file. The current contents of memory are stored in this file. So now we have basically half of what our snapshot is. If we ever need to restore this virtual machine from the snapshot, if we ever need to revert back to that snapshot, we're going to need the contents of memory to bring that virtual machine back to the state that it was in.
