Our #YPSpotlight today is on Jessica Marin, branch manager for South Texas Federal Credit Union in Weslaco, TX. She has been in the credit union industry for five years!
- What is your favorite thing about working in the credit union? It’s the people, our members and our credit union family. It starts with a conversation with them to get to know each other and how we can assist them. Even if it’s the slightest thing; for example, assisting our more mature members with online banking. Seeing the relief on their faces when they can finally log in is priceless.
- Have you had a mentor, or have you been a mentor? Coming into the South Texas Federal Credit Union family, you don’t have just one mentor. You have many. We drive each other to do more because we see the potential in each other. We need to get out of our shells and go out and get it. This has helped me get out of my comfort zone and network with people from many organizations, not just financial ones.
- What professional development, engagement, or networking activities have you participated in, such as conferences, councils, chapters, Sister Societies, etc.? I am on the steering committee for Leadership Mid-Valley with our Weslaco Chamber of Commerce. We oversee the overall functions, such as preparing and approving a general outline of the educational program. It's also my fourth year as a loaned executive in United Way advocating to raise funds for our community. These programs have helped me become a better leader and develop my potential.
- Who is your role model, and why? Without a doubt, my role model is my father. He is one the most hardworking men I know. He has taught me to be dedicated and motivated with my goals. My father is not the easiest person to talk to. He is what my generation calls “Es de rancho!” These values taught me to be independent, mind-focused, and look out for others in need.
- What are you currently reading or binge-watching? Sweet Magnolias. It’s about three lovely women going through their own hardships and overcoming them together. I can’t stop watching it because I see myself and my two sisters in the show.
