SANTA CLARA, Calif. /June 12, 2024 /Archer Aviation -- Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE:ACHR), a leader in electric vertical takeoff and landing (#eVTOL) aircraft, today announced that on June 8th its Midnight aircraft successfully completed transition flying at a speed of 100+ mph. Archer has now achieved transition with two different full-scale eVTOL aircraft. #Transition is well known in the industry as a very difficult milestone few companies have reached. At ~6,500 lbs, Midnight is believed to be one of the largest eVTOL aircraft to complete transition, which is critical to being able to carry commercially viable passenger payloads. A transition flight occurs when the aircraft takes off vertically like a helicopter, accelerates forward, transitions from thrust-borne to wing-borne flight like an airplane with tilt propellers forward before decelerating and landing vertically. Midnight’s flight test program will now continue its progress with plans to fly simulated commercial routes to demonstrate the aircraft’s operational readiness, executing high-rate flight operations, testing additional flight maneuvers that will be used in commercial settings along with continuing to expand its speed and endurance flight envelope. Archer continues to make certification progress as the company has now received its Part 135 and Part 145 certificates from the FAA. Additionally, Archer is one of two companies in the world to have its final airworthiness criteria for an eVTOL aircraft issued by the #FAA. Midnight is now in the final “implementation” phase of its Type #Certification program with piloted flight testing on track to begin later this year. Archer’s goal is to transform urban travel, replacing 60–90-minute commutes by car with estimated 10–20-minute electric air taxi flights that are safe, sustainable, low noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation. Archer’s Midnight is a piloted, four-passenger aircraft designed to perform rapid back-to-back flights with minimal charge time between flights. Credit: Archer

#flyawayFriday - While we may also see recreational ultralite eVTOLs joining the millions of UAS eVTOLs in the skies, only three eVTOLs stand any chance of going into commercial service by or in 2025, namely the EHang (NASDAQ: EH) 216S in China, the Joby Aviation S4 in the US and the Volocopter GmbH VoloCity in Europe - you need a conforming prototype to make that deadline, Robb Report. Considering that the Airbus Helicopters H160 received certification by the Federal Aviation Administration recently, almost a full 3 years after it was certified by the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency , its highly unlikely that any aircraft that has yet to make its first flight, like the Archer Midnight pictured will be flying commercially before 2027, despite the promises.

#flyawayFriday - despite all the #advancedairmobility hype and dreams, like helicopters and helicopter charters there is a market, but will it be big enough to justify all the moneys that have been ingested in eVTOL development, when the market is likely to be dominated by a handful of aerospace companies, like every other aerospace market segment, and on the aviation side, profit margins on airservices are unlikely to be that much better than the part 135 operators and the airlines, even with autonomous flight systems? AAM is really about making aviation more sustainable and quieter, starting with small fixed wing and VTOL aircraft. Welcome to the third era of aviation, the electric age, which officially started with the type certification of the game changing Pipistrel Aircraft Velis Electro, in June 2020, its going to be an interest "flight" for many AAM companies and their investors.

#Sundaythoughts - as leading eVTOL "air/flying taxis", like the Joby Aviation S4 (first flight 2017) near type certification, subject to the Federal Aviation Administration actually being ready to issue such, one has to ask what will it take to compete with current leading urban airtaxis and commuter air VTOL aircraft, like the Airbus Helicopters H125, Bell Flight 407 and 505, and Robinson Helicopter Company R66? Firstly an eVTOL aircraft needs to be able to do 3 typical airport city centre fully laden one way flights per peak hour for 3 peak hours with just top-up charging at a similar cost per seat mile, something no eVTOL developer has demonstrated yet. Secondly existing public heliports need to be assessed to ensure that they can handle the weight and downwinds generated by a specific eVTOL. Other challenges include up-skilling aircraft maintenance facilities to support electric aircraft, especially on the battery and electrical side with high voltages. Aerospace supply chains need to be expanded to provide parts and components support for electric aircraft. A major challenge is finalizing and promulgating regulations to allow regulators to issue type certificates for eVTOLs and larger electric fixed wing aircraft. The lack of dedicated airworthiness standards for powered lift aircraft, by the FAA, despite having issued the b certification for the Leonardo AW609 in late 2007, is of particular con The biggest challenge is still public acceptance of premium midmile niche transport mode, current helicopters and eVTOLs (which include eHelicopters), by the average person catching a more energy efficient and sustaimable electric bus or train at a fraction of the price, with often minimal door to door time savings. #advancedairmolity #airtaxi #commuteraircarrier #eVTOL #flyingtaxi #urbanairmobiliyu

📰 News we're reading about: More than two dozen major eVTOL builders have been founded in the past decade, and a few are nearing commercial certification from the FAA or EASA. What's next: Each company is working on its own aircraft design, but all have the same goal -- to provide on-demand short, high-speed air trips to transport commuters or cargo. Why it matters: eVTOLs could be four or five times less noisy to nearby listeners than helicopter engines. They can also be significantly safer, greener, and cheaper to fly. #advancedairmobility / #innovativeairmobility #realitycheck needed - I sm somewhat disappointed that Lufthansa are focusing on niche eVTOLs and ignoring far more efficient eCTOL aircraft, like the BETA TECHNOLOGIES CX300, Electra.aero eSTL and Eviation Aircraft Alice, as well as the ground breaking Pipistrel Aircraft Velis Electro for initial pilot training. Advanced air mobility is not just eVTOLs and airtaxis, which have been around since 1919 are not just eVTOLs. With ~450000 fixed wing GA aircraft and just ~26000 civilian VTOLs (helicopters) globally, the real gamechanger and value add is fixed wing electric aircraft, not eVTOL. PS. Advanced / Innovative Air Mobikity is also not just electric aircraft, its also autonomous flight initiatives like the Xwing Cessna Aircraft Company Caravan, and Sikorsky Matrix helicopter flight system for helicopters. https://lnkd.in/dfYR23CV
