Years ago, I got sent by a temp office to a sweatshop...I mean a pastry-making factory whose name rhymes with Stillsbury. One night, we had the rare occasion to have too many people working (yes, it does happen every once in a while). I landed what was arguably the cushiest of the cushiest jobs that night. But just two hours in, the manager approached me, very sheepishly and apologetically, and asked if I could switch stations due to an employee falling ill.
My response? "I work for you. You tell me where to go."
Fast forward to yesterday, and I found myself echoing those very words to my new boss, as she reshaped my role into something quite different from what was initially described. Her reaction reminded me of the pastry factory manager's – a mix of surprise and gratitude.
Here's the kicker: Three days after that first instance, I was offered a direct-hire position, a promotion, and a $2.00/hour raise. All because I embraced flexibility.
So, what's the moral of the story? In a world that's constantly changing, our willingness to adapt and our positive attitude can not only help us navigate challenges but also unlock unexpected opportunities.
Now, I'm curious: Have you ever had an "I work for you" moment that led to something great? How has flexibility played a role in your career journey?
