Here at BlackRock we are committed to ensuring our most valuable asset—our people—have exemplary experiences and dynamic careers. So committed that we dedicate an entire month to just that…career development. As our leaders stated earlier this month, extraordinary careers don’t happen overnight – they take time, attention, and support. To me, career planning is all around the three E’s: Experience, Exposure and Education. What experiences am I getting today, and what do I need for my next chapter? Do I have opportunities for exposure to the right leaders and forums to continue to grow? And how am I building education into my day-to-day and remaining a student and a teacher in my field? Groundbreaking businesswoman Mary Kay Ash once said: "Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve." I encourage each of you to dedicate time this month to consider your three E’s and develop a blueprint to incorporate them into your week. Which E will you focus on first?

April is #Career Development Month here at BlackRock! Our business can only be as successful as our people are empowered to be – and Career Development Month was created after hearing from our people that they wanted more resources to support their professional growth. Career Development Month provides a dedicated time for us to take a step back and really think about our ambitions, and what it’ll take to achieve them. What skills do we want to develop? Where do we want to be in 1, 3 or 5 years? It’s an opportunity for 1:1 conversations focused on clear feedback and concrete action plans to help us build toward the extraordinary careers we want everyone at BlackRock to experience. My colleagues know that I like to say, “Careers are a journey, not a destination.” They aren’t usually about the most direct route from Point A to Point B – and they don’t tend to look that way, either. Career Development Month puts each employee in the driver’s seat, helping them map out and navigate the next phase of their journey.

This month, we’re highlighting a superstar partner who goes above and beyond for our program: Debi Gewirtz, Head of HR at Aetos Alternatives Management. “Aetos was founded in 2001 by Co-CEO’s Anne Casscells and Michael Klein, and with our team of approximately 30 employees, we provide customized hedge fund and OCIO solutions to institutional investors. Aetos has created a collegial, inclusive and collaborative culture focused on each employee’s career and personal goals. In combination with our client-centric approach to developing investment solutions, we build longstanding relationships with our clients. The power of mentorship has been embraced since our inception, with many of our now-senior professionals growing into their roles over time after joining Aetos as junior or mid-level professionals. Aetos was grateful to find First Workings as we searched for an organization to partner with and bring meaningful mentoring experiences to our team that extend beyond our firm. We’ve worked closely with First Workings to create programs that both meet our needs as a small firm and also meet the needs of First Workings’ flagship and alumni communities. Over the past year, we hosted a First Workings alumni for a one-month rotational internship so that they could learn more about multiple teams and roles within a financial services firm and hosted a mock interview and networking event for 8 alumni. This summer we have three mentor-mentee pairs across the flagship program and the alumni community. As a professional administering the programs, partnering with the First Workings’ staff to bring meaningful programs to their student community as well as to Aetos’ team has been incredibly rewarding; the way we’ve worked together and taken a customized approach to our partnership closely aligns with Aetos’ values and how we work with clients. Our team members who have participated in our programs with First Workings have found them to be truly rewarding experiences. They’ve wrapped up programs feeling energized and asking when our next event/program will take place and many have made connections that do/will extend beyond the program that our team is participating in. We believe that successful investing requires having a broad perspective and, therefore, we actively seek ways to broaden our understanding of social, political and economic factors, among others, that can impact outcomes when analyzing individual securities. Our team members have learned a lot from listening to the stories, challenges and ambitions of the First Workings students, as we recognize the power they possess to shape the future. “

Just attended the coolest internal Career Day at PhillipCapital! This was my first experience with a company actively encouraging rotation, and I found it incredibly interesting. It shows a real commitment to employee growth and development. Not only did we get a sneak peek into how some of the departments work, but a rotation expert shared how it helps you see the big picture. Everyone, from the supporting functions like operations and IT to the client-facing roles like marketing and sales, contributes to the company's success! Makes you appreciate the teamwork, right? Anyone out there done multiple rotations? Share your experience in the comments! Shoutout to the Marketing, Trading, Operations, IT, and Fund Management teams for showcasing their work! Thanks also to the rotation experts for the insightful perspective. Luke Lim Huankiat Seh Desmond Gan Lini Lory Kaichou Han Ma Jie Bryce L. Chee Wee Tan Big thanks to Human Capital & Rui Ping Teo for putting on such a fantastic event! #PhillipCareerDay #CareerDevelopment P.S. I'm not planning to rotate now, just go and kepo 😜

Helping finance professionals master data, FP&A and CFO advisory services through learning experiences, masterminds, training and community | Adjunct Lecturer in Data Analytics | Microsoft MVP
Rotational programs should become the norm for FP&As at midsized and larger companies. This ensures that they touch different parts of the business and understand how finance supports them. They gain institutional knowledge. They discover more about what they want to do. And the experience reveals what they don't want to do too. New associates backfill positions when they're vacated. When graduates finish the program, they enter into their new roles far more equipped and confident. Though not without its costs, the arrangement is lower-risk and higher-return for companies and candidates alike.

On career success 🏆🏆 Last week I had the pleasure to facilitate a panel discussion “ From Aspirant to Achiever “during the Goldman Sachs Asset Management #futureleaders conference. We discussed how as an aspirant we I’ll focus on performance and as we move towards achievers managing one’s career strategically and actively will ensure its longevity. So what are the key elements which will contribute to #success ? 1/ Life lessons and a growth mindset. Leonid Nji, CFA and Hilary Lopez shared some nuggets of wisdom and life experience and lesson learned and how it impacted their career trajectory 2/ A personal brand and reputation @ luncinda Wakefield and Verona Kenny reflected on its importance and how it contributed to their career success 3/ Network, mentors and sponsors and the importance of diversity and inclusion. @ luncinda Wakefield shared with us the key behaviours to foster and inclusive culture 4/ Personal #energy management and #worklifebalance Some of us need a nap at lunchtime, others produce their best work late in the day .. Find out what works best for you and do more of it 5/ #selfawareness ,the common denominator to all the above points. Without it nothing happens. So a big thank you to the fabulous panelists the great organisation team Amanda Cottle Hannah Firth Mariana Barona and Tim Hinds-Addow to the great audience of future leaders for their questions and participation. We look forward to seeing you again next year #thefutureisbright 😎
