Ok, all my cyber professionals, I have a serious subject we need to discuss today, which was inspired by this great post by Carlota Sage; they are an S-Tier CISO, so make sure to read what they wrote and give them a follow. Anyways, let's talk about gatekeeping. Cybersecurity is rife with gatekeepers who aim to create this elitist circle ideology of "those who are good" and "those who are not me," and man, it is so frustrating. I first saw this issue heavily when I was leaving the military and trying to get a job as a red team operator. The gatekeeping was so bad that if you didn't know the right people, you weren't "good enough" to conduct Red Team ops, which meant you weren't getting hired for that job. I had experience doing real OCO, plus courses on how to break into places covertly and hide in plain sight, yet I was told I didn’t have the experience to do the job. All because no one currently in the industry could vouch for me. I got lucky with my first job, thanks to a referral from someone I served with who was already in the role, but it was wild to me to be told I didn’t have the experience because no one could vouch for me. It’s something that is slowly changing in the RTO space, but still, I had to have someone help me through that gate, and I still see that being the case today with some of my mentees. This isn’t only restricted to offsec, I see this same issue now with CISO roles. There are some S Tier brand new CISOs out there who have gone out and made a difference in their organizations because they care, but I bet you if you ask how they got that role, they will tell you they fought tooth and nail to get there to prove they could do the job OR they made the right connections so that someone would vouch for them. They should have been in the role much earlier but were pushed away because of the gatekeeping. Yet, on that same note, I know of some real F-tier CISOs who jump from position to position with ease because they have already made it in the gate. No problem finding a job even when they are known to not be the best in the role. Now, to be fair, the CISO is probably the most challenging position in CS as it's usually the most under-supported and undervalued role in the C suite, but we need to change this culture from the inside out so that we can get the right motivated individuals who are ready to take on the challenge of securing organizations if we are ever to stay ahead of our criminal counterparts. "You will be a shit CISO until you're first a CISO" Is an excuse to gatekeep nothing more. What are your thoughts?
I appreciate everyone who responded to my "a #vCISO is a #CISO" post yesterday - I especially appreciated the minority voices who disagreed with me. It helped me understand their fear (a dilution of their own value), and it helped me better articulate why I feel the way I do. It comes down to this for me: "There are many paths to good, and they don't all involve having been a full time CISO before." If you genuinely cannot understand that the same title means something different across the myriad span of corporate shapes and sizes, then nothing I say is going to help you. Know this: I am not your enemy. But your fear of me might be. #cisolife #vcisolife #stillcomingforyoudinosaur

Dahvid Schloss - So glad you’re using your platform to shine light on this problem. It is unfortunate and IMO detestable and I commend anyone with the fortitude to call it out and use their platform to speak against it. We might not be able to control what and how others go about their actions but we can certainly #bethechange in our industry. I can see the other side of things, there is certainly a #grifter problem in our space with folks that have not performed anything even remotely close to the job selling courses and bootcamps. However, the correct mitigation to this IMO is providing quality resources and making them available to the aspiring/entry level offensive security practitioners not #gatekeeping and creating barriers of entry for those who want to pursue a career in the #offensivesecurity space. Dan Desko, the team at Echelon Risk + Cyber is top notch, not only due to demonstrated #technicalexcellence but commentary like what Dahvid posts makes me think that he is part of the positive change occurring in the industry. #HackerHermanos #OffensiveSecurity #penetrationtesting #informationsecurity

Thank you Julie Vi for snapping these. Running a #ThreatOps for SentinelOne is a privilege. I encourage any teams out there looking to apply their threat hunting skills and get their hands on the S1 Singularity Platform to analyze multiple real-world malware incidents to engage with their local S1 teams to get one set up (or reach out to me and I can direct you to the right person). ThreatOps is a gamified #ctf that is also a very effective learning opportunity. Our tiered approach means that someone that has never seen S1 or that has limited experience threat hunting can engage and learn, while veterans can pursue even more challenging flags to test their skill. The 2 hours you spend on this focused activity are probably the best way to understand how S1 enables analysists to collect the critical information they need to make a decision in as short a timeframe as possible. #threathunting #cyberdefense #socanalyst #ctf
