You know, I am pretty disappointed with the current tech job environment, specifically the expectations of employers towards a job position. I understand that some employers might not know exactly what constitutes a 'Frontend Developer'; however, that is their responsibility, not mine. Basically, why do I see #backenddeveloper related tasks in a #frontenddeveloper position? A good example is '...implement, test, develop client-facing APIs...'. I get the implementation/integration part, but the other stuff should be for a backend developer. I find it distasteful.

Case: Hiring a Senior Frontend Developer for a Product Company PART 1 Context Our client, a product company developing solutions for optimizing sales and logistics for businesses, approached us with a request to find a senior frontend developer with deep knowledge of React. The company is highly developed, the team consists of highly qualified specialists, and the company itself has repeatedly been recognized as the best employer in its segment. Initial Situation The client had high requirements for candidates: • At least 5 years of commercial frontend development experience. • Higher technical education. • Excellent knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, understanding of OOP, FP principles, and common patterns. • Knowledge and application of SOLID, DRY, KISS principles. • Confident knowledge of TypeScript. • At least 2 years of commercial experience with React. The technical interview consisted of two stages: 1. Live coding (about 1 hour). 2. A discussion with technical questions. The client had their own vision of the ideal candidate: a person who has been “living” with development since childhood, with a career starting in university, no experience as a system administrator, an understanding of backend, and strong engineering skills. The team works at a high pace and is fully remote. Problem Over a month, we presented about 25 candidates to the client, 7 of whom received offers. All of them declined. The client was surprised, as previously people had readily accepted offers for backend and full-stack positions. This prompted us to delve deeper into the issue.

This is exactly what I mean when I say I'm a backend heavy full stack developer.

You shouldn't hire a full-stack developer. From my experience, full-stack developers are usually proficient in one area (backend or frontend), and another could be worse. Plus, their multitasking causes lower development speed. Additionally, such specialists are harder to hire, and they ask for higher compensation. So, if you want to balance code quality, development speed, and budget, consider hiring separate specialists for each part of your project. There is an unwritten rule among software developers that says: "A fullstack developer is a developer who is neither good at frontend nor at backend" while this can be true for someone with 0 development experience who started learning the two stacks in parallel, however throughout my career all the fullstack developers I met were backend developers who at some point in there career were asked to learn a frontend technology to push in a project that needed some frontend changes that are not worth hiring a frontend developer. While of course they are not as good nor quick as a frontend developer, however they have enough knowledge to unblock tickets and display there backend changes in the UI. So I think we should rather say: "A fullstack developer is a backend developer who knows how to center a div". #softwaredevelopment #fullstackdeveloper #backenddeveloper #frontenddeveloper
