Do you hire for data governance roles internally or externally? It's probably a good idea to do a healthy mix of both! Definitely don't ignore the potential of your current workforce! You already have some great data custodians! Note that if you are assigning Data Governance roles (data owner, data steward,...) to your colleagues on top of their current roles, you need to ensure that the proper steps are taken to ensure they have: 1) Enough time allocated for their new role. 2) Motivation to perform the new tasks as well as their current ones. 2) Support from their direct management. That means you have to 1) Estimate their effort. 2) Ensure their targets/KPIs include Data Governance activities. 2) Have executive sponsorship for the Data Governance program Properly embedding Data Governance in the organization is key to its success. #DoTheWork #DataGovernance #ChangeManagement element61

A lot of training and education folk get called in here to pinch hit for these initiatives when teams struggle to align, work toward common goal/literacy level, or even understand the point. It’s so important to have bridge-building sessions be a part of any good intake and needs analysis BEFORE training is contracted/or as a prerequisite to building one. If skipped, many times this means the education team gets squeezed on training objectives and scope creep happens. One training will not fit all for this. Multiple “user” personas will need to be sketched! #dataliteracy #dataeducation #datagovernance #instructionaldesign

A job misunderstood : the 1st Head of Data Governance. I've summed up everything you need to know to become one (or to hire one) 👇 To be 1st Head of Data Governance is to improve data usages abnormally. Because when the 1st Head of Data Governance arrives: - the Top Management is overwhelmed - there is no documentation to understand what exists - there is no training Basically, the new Head of Data Governance has to go it alone and take over the baby that the CDO or IT struggled to get off the ground. But that's when things go (just about) right. Because in many companies, the job of 1st Head of Data Gov is : - Misunderstood - Ill-framed - Neglected. The result : a lot of 1st Head of Data Governance leave their company (or get fired) in the months following their arrival. -- Want even more? Helping Law Firms use Data Governance for Operational Excellence | Host of the Law Firm Data Governance Podcast
Roles, accountabilities, and responsibilities are the “who and how” that form your Data Governance Framework. You know that you need people to be accountable and responsible for the critical data you identify, but what does that mean? 🤔 Figuring out what these roles look like and getting stakeholder agreement to take on these roles is the first activity your stakeholders perceive as ‘data governance’. ❇️ Data Governance Sponsor is usually the most senior person who started the data governance ball rolling. This person needs to be in a credible position to fulfil the role of data governance sponsor, with enough gravitas to influence the most senior stakeholders. ❇️ Data Governance Leads govern and manage data appropriately, the firm needs to identify and assign specific roles and responsibilities. They provide oversight and support for all data governance to ensure awareness and participation across the firm. They also drive decisions on data standards, definitions, and best practices. ❇️ Data Owners and Stewards are two of the essential ‘people roles’ for you to define and implement since they will be involved in most of the data governance framework conversations. #IronCarrot #DataGovernance #DataManagement #LawFirmDataGovernance

Nobody understands Data Governance roles. But in 5 sentences it's all there 🚀 *Head of Data Governance = I establish and oversee the governance framework to ensure data value. *Data Steward = I ensure the quality, security, and compliance of data assets, aligned with policies and business needs. *Data Manager = I develop and implement data policies and standards to ensure the efficient use of data throughout the organization or my domain. *Data Owner = I define usage policies and access permissions for datasets according to business context. *Data Custodian = I safeguard and manage the physical and technical aspects of data, ensuring its secure storage and access. See, not complicated. #datagovernance #data #organization
