Unlocking Potential: The Role of Refugees in the Workforce Employment for refugees and newcomers, particularly the youth, in host countries is a critical aspect of their integration and self-reliance. Job creation is not only important for the economic stability of these individuals but also for the social and cultural enrichment of the host communities. Organizations play a significant role in supporting employment for these groups through various means: Legal Support: Ensuring that refugees have the legal right to work is fundamental. This includes helping them navigate the documentation and permits required to enter the local job market. Skills Training: Many refugees and newcomers possess skills and qualifications from their home countries. Organizations can assist in recognizing these qualifications or provide training to help them acquire new skills that are in demand in the host country. Language Education: Language barriers can be a significant obstacle. Providing language classes helps refugees and newcomers to communicate effectively and increases their employability. Job Matching: Organizations can help by matching the skills of refugees and newcomers with the needs of local employers, facilitating a smoother transition into the workforce. Advocacy: Raising awareness about the benefits of hiring refugees and advocating for policies that support their employment can lead to more inclusive job markets. Mentorship and Networking: Creating programs that connect refugees with local mentors and professional networks can open doors to job opportunities and career advancement. The employment of refugees and newcomers is essential for their well-being and the prosperity of host countries. As fellow human beings, it is our responsibility to show compassion and solidarity. By supporting refugees, we not only provide them with shelter, food, and medical aid, but we also offer them hope and the chance to rebuild their lives. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, makes a difference. It could be volunteering at a local refugee center, donating essential supplies, or advocating for policies that promote their integration and protection. 🌟 MY STORY: Hiring a Refugee is a Win for Employers and Transforms Lives 🌟 I wanted to take a moment to share a personal story of hope, growth and the incredible potential when employers embrace diversity. I escaped Vietnam as a refugee and came to Australia over four decades ago. I couldn't speak a word of English. Since leaving Uni, I've worked every day, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes and haven't claimed one dollar of unemployment benefits. Being inclusive is not a feel good exercise, it delivers tangible benefits. Yet, I know there are employers who are still hesitant to consider employing someone from a refugee background. Let me give you 8 reasons: 🏃 Highly motivated Refugees risk everything to build a better life and bring strong work ethic and eagerness to succeed. 💪 Resourceful and resilient It takes guts and smarts to flee your home country. Those waiting years for resettlement in tough environments are especially patient and resilient. 🔬 Skills and experience Some are highly qualified and/or have highly developed leadership skills - but their qualifications are not recognised. They also bring language and cultural awareness that can help employers to broaden their customer base. 💡 Innovation and problem solving Diverse perspectives can stimulate creativity and innovation in the workplace. Refugees can bring unique problem solving approaches and fresh ideas. 🔄 Adaptable to change Overcoming challenges and adapting to new environments is a daily experience for new arrivals. 🪜 Yearning to grow Hungry and eager to learn, these employees are ideal candidates for development and mentoring. 👫 New workforce community A refugee who succeeds in your workplace will be an advocate for your organisation, opening up a new pool of potential employees. 🌏 It says a lot about you Hiring and developing new arrivals shows your customers, partners and employees that you support a fair and equal society. To my fellow refugees, I want you to know that your journey matters and your skills are a valued asset for employers. And to all the employers out there, consider the incredible benefits that refugees can bring to your organisation. There is value in diversity. I've just spent 15 minutes answering questions from five refugees about employment in the UK, and I'd encourage everyone in my network to do it too. Ghiyath, Majdi, Liuba, Serag and Nissrin are all at completely different stages of their journeys to employment in the UK. Their questions include: - Whether to keep applying for dream roles, or accept a less appealing position to gain work experience? - How to turn international experience into an advantage? - What are important etiquette tips when working in the UK? You can find the questions on a brand new forum that Breaking Barriers launched today for #RefugeeWeek. Business leaders are asking questions too, so that they can learn from refugees to create more inclusive and refugee-friendly workplaces. Today is #WorldRefugeeDay and with the crisis and displacement of millions of people in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe, it takes on even greater importance and urgency. The stories of refugees are heartbreaking as they strive to build better lives for themselves, often in countries very different from their home country. From my own experience, if given the opportunity, refugees will continue to contribute to a stronger, safer and more vibrant world.��They need an opportunity to engage in the economy and to support their families. And hiring refugees addresses talent shortages – so is a win-win all around. When with my grandsons at a playground while visiting my daughter and her family in Boston, I met an Afghan refugee who was there with his young son. He was on crutches having been injured by a landmine in Kabul. We got talking and he shared that he had chosen Boston because of the excellent universities and hospitals. He was training to be a lab technician and had ambitions for his two children, hoping they would get a stellar education positioning them for fulfilling careers. He was eager to be economically independent and to engage fully in the US economy. Organizations like the Tent Partnership for Refugees, that I am proud to be on the advisory board of, realise this and work with organizations to hire refugees and to provide them with economic opportunities. Just this year, 70 companies came together to launch TENT UK, a new coalition of businesses committed to connecting refugees to work. I applaud all of these organizations who are empowering refugees to build a better life for themselves. The organization’s commitment to refugees is impressive; they delivered language and professional development classes to over 12,000 refugees in Germany. In Sweden, they had a shortage of forklift drivers and trained refugees to pass the rigorous test and to take on these roles. The video on the link below shares the inspiring story of Ghais Dayob, a Syrian refugee, who fled to Germany in 2014.
