BE A FRONT-ROW PERSON Yesterday evening, I ran a two-hour, interactive session on pitching your start-up for Innosuisse in Fribourg, Switzerland. I have been working with Innosuisse for years in locations all over la Suisse Romande (the French-speaking part) and will be in Yverdon-les-Bains tonight. After the session prior to mine, while the participants were having sandwiches and drinks, I prepared for my session. While doing so, I noticed something. There were no bags in the front row. Because, as is often the case, nobody was sitting in the front row. So I decided to change my opening. Once everyone was seated (everywhere but the first row), I began in a loud voice as a slowly walked across the stage... "Nobody! "Ever! "Sits in the front row! "Sure, it's safer to sit in the back where you are less likely to be noticed, but is that how you want to go through life? "You are all entrepreneurs; you all have great ideas. And you are going to have to put yourself out there. In front of investors and clients and the media and the general public. "And yes, it might be risky. "But always playing it safe is one of the riskiest things you can do in life. "Don't play it safe. Be a front-row person."
