For many AANHPI women and other women of color, a SCOTUS ruling otherwise would have threatened their bodily autonomy and further barred them from access to safe and effective abortion care. A report by NAPAWF found that AANHPI women in particular were twice as likely to choose medication abortion over other methods. Read the full statement: https://lnkd.in/dG2df4Vc

Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Idaho v. United States; Moyle v. United States – the case about whether emergency abortion care is included under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). SCOTUS failed to tell states they cannot ban emergency abortions. The ruling brings temporary relief for Idahoans, but the court should have made clear that patients across the country need access to emergency care. Do you know what your employer would do if you needed life saving or fertility saving abortion care and were in a state where emergency abortion care is illegal? #reproductivehealth #socialimpact #CSR #employeebenefits https://lnkd.in/gG5QPr4y

Exciting news from Manitoba with the passing of Bill 8! Manitoba is now the 7th province in Canada to enact safe access or “bubble zone” legislation around clinics that provide abortion services, and the homes of those working at the clinics. A variety of conduct is now prohibited within those zones, and violations could result in penalties or ground civil causes of action. Read this article by my colleague Peter Mueller and I for more details!
Earlier this week, the Manitoba Legislature completed the final reading of The Safe Access to Abortion Services Act (also known as Bill 8). Peter Mueller and Allison Kilgour elaborate on how Bill 8 will be a source of relief for both patients seeking abortion services and healthcare professionals who are involved in the provision of abortion services. This week, we heard from Associate Director of Women’s Health Policy at KFF, Laurie Sobel, about how conflicting federal and state abortion laws have created a difficult situation for doctors - leading some to ask themselves, "how close to death do you need to be to get an abortion?" How are organizations handling organizing/hosting meetings in states that have anti-reproductive justice laws? In a recent article published by Nature Medicine, authors suggest that scientific and medical conferences should not be held in states that ban abortion, as such bans put the lives of women at risk. Currently, 16 of the 50 US states have now essentially eliminated access to abortion. Abortion is a part of healthcare and restricting access to abortion further exacerbates healthcare disparities. https://lnkd.in/g9E2uQtJ #HealthEquity #ReproJustice
