Why do we exist? Last week, my great coworker Alexia Nichols and I co-facilitated a workshop with a senior leadership team using Red Wolf Group's P.E.R.F.O.R.M framework, a model which unpacks how to build high performing teams. In this model, P represents Purpose. We are all very familiar with an organisation having a purpose statement, describing the overarching reason that a company exists, how it should conduct itself and the impact it has on who it’s serving. Companies use their purpose statement to help drive their mission and goals. What we sometimes fail to consider is that a team should also identify their team’s purpose statement. This statement is key to keeping them aligned and focused. Working towards something of significant impact. It can create a stronger sense of engagement and purpose for individuals within the team to know they are all working towards something of a greater impact. Whilst facilitating discussions with different heads of teams and discussing the importance of them unpacking this with their own team members, it dawned on me that many of us do not have a personal purpose statement. Why do WE exist? A personal sense of purpose serves as the compass guiding us through the complexities of our personal and professional life. A sense of purpose imbibes everything we do with significance, creating a deeper connection between everyday activities and our values and sense of identity. It can serve as the driving force, instilling meaning into our actions and decisions. At a fundamental level, it provides us with clarity amidst uncertainty, offering a framework for setting our goals and priorities. With this, we can find greater fulfillment, motivation and ultimately success in our lives. It can also enable us with the fuel and passion to inspire and drive others to greater fulfilment and success.
