✅🖥️ Nielsen Gauge (10/17): “Sporting events were also impactful for cable, as the genre saw a 25.5% bump in viewing. ESPN carried the top 11 telecasts: 10 were football-related, and the U.S. Open took ninth place. Despite the increased sports viewing, total cable viewing slipped 1.1% from August, led by declines of 10% and 5.9% for the news and feature film genres, respectively. Streaming viewing declined for the second month in a row, but the “Suits” phenomenon continued, racking up more than 8 billion minutes of viewing in September. And as it was on broadcast and cable, sports was a factor for Prime Video, which saw a 7.5% bump in viewership as a result of NFL Thursday Night Football and the second season of The Wheel of Time. With the return of Amazon TNF on Prime, the two Thursdays with games represented the highest viewing days for Prime Video. Tubi and the Roku Channel were the other two streaming TV services to see viewing lifts in September. And with the increase in broadcast viewing, it comes as no surprise that linear (vvMVPD/FEP) streaming climbed to represent 5.7% of TV usage—a high water mark for 2023 so far.” ⬇️🏈 #streamingtv #ctvadvertising #cordcutting

New and in-demand content, especially sports, can drive TV usage across different platforms and genres. According to Nielsen, broadcast TV viewing increased almost 13% in September, with sports programming accounting for 25.3% of the total. Sports viewing on broadcast surged 360% from August, attracting younger audiences under 50. The top 20 telecasts in September were all football-related. Meanwhile, #streaming usage declined for the 2nd month in a row, dropping 1.7% from August. Even so, Prime Video was the only streaming service to gain share points, thanks to sport events. Cable usage was also flat compared with August, as a 22% increase in sports viewing was offset by a 19% decrease in movie viewing. More interesting stats on https://lnkd.in/gpxKMju2 #tv #streamingtv

On the digital front, business owners need to start shifting their advertising budgets to CTV in order to keep up with viewers. These numbers will only increase as Gen Z becomes a player in the consumer game. It's not 2005 anymore! While you're at it, make sure your website is as modern and accommodating as your storefront, or else they will scroll on by. Our digital game needs to be as put together as Aunt Merna was when she went to church on Sunday. "At the platform level, YouTube marked its 12th consecutive month as the top streaming service. Peacock saw a 29% spike in usage, driven by NFL playoff coverage, to account for a record 1.6% share of TV. Netflix gained 0.2 share points to end the month at 7.9% of TV, its highest since August 2023, and the 10% increase in Roku Channel usage bumped its share back to 1.1% of total TV."
