The Mississippi River is changing, and we are experiencing both higher and lower water levels, leading to more frequent opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway but also saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico. What impacts will the deepening of the River from 45 to 50 feet, uncontrolled crevasses like Neptune Pass, future planned diversions, and a host of upstream factors like dams have on the water and sediment budget of the River and how will this impact the already fragile Birdfoot Delta? 🌊All of the Great Lakes are in the midst of their seasonal rise. In fact, the monthly mean levels of Lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario climbed five to six inches from March to April. 🌊In addition, each of the Great Lakes experienced above average precipitation in April, as provisional estimates indicate Lakes Michigan-Huron, Erie and Ontario received precipitation that was around 40% above average. 🌊Are all of the lakes predicted to continuing rising in May? The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States #ArmedForces, is responsible for providing power protection from the #sea using the mobility of the United States #Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. The Continental #Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on #land and at #sea. The birth of the U.S. Marine Corps began as a way to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. The recruiting headquarters was in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in #Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines. The Corps was abolished at the end of the Revolutionary War. However, on July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the #creation of the Corps, named it the United States Marine Corps (#USMC) and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy. The #USMC shares many resources with the other branches of the United States military. However, the Corps has sought to maintain its own identity with regards to mission, funding and assets while utilizing the support available from the larger #military branches. Celebrating Armed Forces Day today, the day to honor all who serve or have served in the United States branches of the Department of Defense, both active-duty and former, in the reserves, National Guard or on active duty. Armed Forces Day was created on August 31, 1949, by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force commemoration Days, following the Armed Forces’ unification under one Department of Defense by President Harry S. Truman, when he signed the National Security Act into law on July 26, 1947.
