Day 1276: Why is New Zealand a young country in terms of its human history? Bonus: what does "Mฤori " mean? New Zealand was the last large and liveable place in the world to be discovered. Mฤori ancestors were the first settlers in New Zealand. Mฤori settlement The first people to arrive in New Zealand were ancestors of the Mฤori. The first settlers probably arrived from Polynesia between 1200 and 1300 AD. They discovered New Zealand as they explored the Pacific, navigating by the ocean currents, winds and stars. Some tribal traditions say the first Polynesian navigator to discover New Zealand was Kupe. The first Europeans The Dutch The first European to arrive in New Zealand was the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. The name New Zealand comes from the Dutch โNieuw Zeelandโ, the name first given to us by a Dutch mapmaker. British and French A surprisingly long time passed โ 127 years โ before New Zealand was visited by another European. The Englishman Captain James Cook arrived here in 1769 on the first of 3 voyages. European whalers and sealers then started visiting regularly, followed by traders. By the 1830s, the British government was being pressured to reduce lawlessness in the country and to settle here before the French, who were considering New Zealand as a potential colony. Treaty of Waitangi signed On 6 February 1840 at Waitangi, William Hobson โ New Zealandโs first Governor โ invited assembled Mฤori chiefs to sign a treaty with the British Crown. The treaty was taken all around the country โ as far south as Foveaux Strait โ for signing by local chiefs. More than 500 chiefs signed the treaty that is now known as the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi). The term 'Mฤori' did not exist until the Europeans arrived. It means 'ordinary' and Mฤori used it to distinguish themselves from the new, fair-skinned European settlers. #learnonethingaday

Ever hear the words Lagom, Jante, Hygge and Sisu? Well, until my recent Nordic cruise with my wife, neither had I. Many cite those 4 words as reasons why Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden usually rank among the happiest countries in the world. I discovered that those 4 words could be the key to happier supply chain strategy. Check out my blog in the first comment. #supplychain #disruptions #vuca #nordiccruise

Seasoned IT Wizard with Decades of Expertise Pioneering Technological Advancements! | I can make it rain! | Founder (CEO) | Wizard of Oz at Mutare Group, LLC
In Brazil (yes, Iโm from Brazil... if you havenโt noticed it yet) we have a quote that says โรgua mole em pedra dura, tanto bate atรฉ que fura.โ that can be literally translated as โSoft water on hard stone hits until it bores a hole." It is an incredibly powerful sentiment that truly captures the essence of persistence and determination. This beautifully illustrates that even when faced with seemingly undefeatable obstacles, consistency, and obstinate effort can yield incredible results. It's a stark reminder that it's not always about how forceful or aggressive one's approach is, but rather the unwavering commitment and dedication to a purpose. Think about it โ water, in its gentle and fluid nature, manages to reshape the very fabric of something as tough and unyielding as stone! This is such a profound testament to the idea that with time and steady effort, one can overcome even the most formidable challenges. So, whenever we face a challenge in life and feel like giving up, let's channel the tenacity of that soft water, remember its quiet strength, and know that with patience and perseverance, we too can make an impact! Iโm soft water.

Last year France banned domestic short-haul flights where train alternatives exist, in a bid to cut carbon emissions. This among others affected flights between Paris-Bordeaux (560km by car) and Paris-Lyon (460km by car). https://lnkd.in/daB2VAVp This year the Danish government wants to support short-haul flights in Denmark by introducing a zero-VAT on the airports. Among the affected airports and flights are Karup-CPH (320km by car), Sรธnderborg-CPH (315 km by car) and Aarhus-CPH (347km). And interesting enough this initiative comes at a time where flight frequency among the Danes are โback to normalโ after the Covid lockdown. Why do we keep supporting high carbon emission activities? Why not invest in better trains also in Denmark so we can cut transport time and carbon emissions? https://lnkd.in/dT7bYHsC #carbonemissions #travelindustry #transport
