Sitting outside a beautiful coffee shop in Hamilton, Bermuda. Reflecting after taking a “real” vacation for the first time in a decade. It’s always been a day or two away, or a work trip where I always take time to explore nooks and crannies of cities and towns and discovering things I haven’t seen or haven’t tried. The last 6 days have been different. I took almost a whole week off. I went to visit cousins I hadn’t seen in six years. I carved out time to explore new places, to challenge myself a bit physically, to have fun, to be silly, to indulge, but most importantly, to pause. To look around. To take deep breaths by the water with my eyes closed. To take slower sips of coffee. I also challenged my cousins. To embrace change, to live in the moment, and to appreciate the things they’ll miss. Especially my 21 year old cousin, who is so focused on the future that I want her to think about the present. Both of us have been to and lived in cool places, but since I’m 15 years older than her, I reminded her not to forget the past or to recognize the privilege in what we’ve experienced. Pause. Reflect, but don’t dwell, breathe, repeat.
I’m happy for you, but a touch jealous also. Have fun and continue to slowly enjoy the essence of life.
