Co-Founder and CEO, MedStack (CIX Top20 / TechCrunch Disrupt pick / MedTech Breakthrough award winner / G2 Leader class) & Mentor for Founder Institute, TechStars, several university & health tech incubators
Believe it or not, a decade ago when the first idea of MedStack was coming into being, we got frequent feedback that #cybersecurity for #digitalhealth was too small / narrow / niche a market to build a dedicated business around. Fast forward to 2024, and the US is reeling from the biggest attack on this industry ever, slowing access to care and fair compensation for providers: https://lnkd.in/gkSDjX7C Important questions are being considered and reconsidered: - Can healthcare really safely rely on single monolithic private technology players holding inordinate sway in pace of innovation, integrations and risk? - Why is cybersecurity in healthcare particularly hard? - Why is health data still so difficult to share to improve care outcomes? Some supplementary sobering facts and statistics (sources: IBM, Experian): - costs of data breaches in healthcare have increased 53% over 3 years - average cost of healthcare breach is $11M USD, vs $4.5M overall average - health records are worth ~ 50x that of other data elements on the Dark Web - the public cloud accounts for 82% of breaches - phishing and social engineering rank very high for vectors of attack We fundamentally believe that healthcare service can be improved by a more democratized innovation ecosystem, building cloud-connected solutions for patients, providers, researchers, payors, pharmacists, families and more. But achieving this requires trust on all sides, in an environment in which trust is being challenged every day. That's why we work on building in, proving and maintaining security trust for digital health.

🔐 "Empowering Health Tech: Secure, Compliant, and Future-Ready with HIPAA" 🏥✨ In today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, how can your organization guarantee the safety of protected health information (PHI). The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) sets the gold standard for protecting electronic protected health information (e-PHI). Regular HIPAA risk assessments are your organization's best defense against data breaches and cyber threats. Who Needs HIPAA Compliance? 📋 Healthcare Providers: Hospitals, clinics, physicians, dentists, and psychologists. 📋 Health Plans: Insurance companies, HMOs, company health plans, and government programs like Medicare and Medicaid. 📋 Healthcare Clearinghouses: Entities that process nonstandard health information into a standard format. 📋 Business Associates: Third parties that handle PHI on behalf of covered entities, including IT service providers, billing companies, and consultants. Why Conduct HIPAA Risk Assessments? 🚨 Avoid Hefty Fines: Steer clear of penalties up to $1.5 million per year per violation. 🔒 Fortify Security: Stay ahead of cyber threats and ensure robust data protection. 🌟 Build Trust: Enhance your reputation by prioritizing data privacy and security. 8 Steps to Implement Your HIPAA Risk Assessment: 1️⃣ Understand the Scope: Cover all e-PHI across various mediums. 2️⃣ Review Your Data: Track where e-PHI is stored, received, maintained, and sent. 3️⃣ Detect & Document Risks: Identify potential threats and vulnerabilities. 4️⃣ Assess Security Measures: Evaluate the effectiveness of current safeguards. 5️⃣Determine Likelihood & Impact: Categorize potential risk incidents. 6️⃣ Assign Risk Levels & Actions: Implement corrective measures to mitigate risks. 7️⃣Audit & Document: Maintain thorough records to demonstrate compliance. 8️⃣Periodic Updates: Conduct assessments annually or after significant changes. Best Practices for Success: 🌐 Empower a HIPAA Leader: Assign a compliance champion within your team. 🎯 Focus on Risk Mitigation: Prioritize identifying and addressing vulnerabilities. 📜 Keep Detailed Records: Ensure all policies and processes are documented and accessible. 🔄 Repeat Regularly: Make assessments a recurring annual task. ✨Akitra’s cutting-edge AI-powered Compliance Automation platform is here to simplify your HIPAA readiness and risk management. 🚀 Ready to turbocharge your compliance process?
