Seven years ago, to the day, I made a life and career-changing decision to leave a role and company that didn’t fit and pursue joining a startup tackling a cause near and dear to me: helping women and men return to the workforce after a career break (check out: reacHIRE). I could not have known then what a spectacular journey it would lead me on. It would allow me not only to experience the scrappiness of working in a smaller, entrepreneurial environment but would help me pivot from marketing to talent as my primary career focus. I’m grateful to Addie Swartz and Ellenmarie Rhone who got creative in welcoming me into the company: my first lesson in how quickly you need to shift and adapt in a startup. From that journey, to falling in love with recruiting, to honoring my inner drive to “help”, to founding Epitome Executive Search, to meeting many people I wouldn’t have otherwise, and learning so much along the way. I wouldn’t trade the ebbs and flows for anything. So today, in a moment when many executives and humans are reflecting on “What’s next?” “What’s my purpose?” “What are my strengths and where do they fit?” Don’t be afraid to try. Experiment. As, Jamie Varon eloquently says: “Make good decisions for yourself. Sharing a great read from Bloomberg which truly resonates as I am a "solopreneur" in my current avatar and have pivoted from Finance to HR. Having worked in Finance and Commercial roles for 22 years and leading large and remotely based teams, I was always enamored with how we could improve our team's leadership and management capabilities. I was also at a loss to understand why it takes four to five months to fill open roles - our salary surveys consistently indicated that we were in the top 10% in the market, we were the largest MNC in the agri input space and offered compelling career paths to talented individuals. My fixation in resolving this problem led me to start Invictus Search in 2020. Additionally, I had this urge to do something different from Finance, something where I could learn, unlearn and re-learn that helped me pivot from Finance to Human Resources and a good place to start was with talent acquisition. And Invictus Search was born with the objective of finding the best leadership talent for your needs in the fastest possible time! The challenge of building something new is exciting - especially when you have spent almost your entire life building for others! When I am building my own, there are no redundant meetings, I can choose who I want to meet for how long and how to pitch my business or say no to opportunities! I would not have had this freedom working for an organization. I can also choose to invest in my own learning and development without asking for permission or a budget! Kudos to all you solopreneurs out there! For those who are yet to take the plunge, a good way to start is by doing a side gig while you are employed. It need not be for money but something that gives you an opportunity to follow your dreams. You can always convert this to a revenue generating opportunity when you start being a full-time solopreneur. Leaving you with this thought for the weekend! 𝐈 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 (𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫) “What an arrogant pri*k!” I hear some of you say…. But hear me out please. I had a conversation yesterday with a business leader from the EduTech sector. We started talking about USPs, then Elevator Pitches. I think she’d been binge watching Dragons Den! So she asked my USP. “Well 96% of the hires I make are still in situ 12 months later.” Her reply: “That’s really good but not really the USP I’m getting at.” I came back with: “Ok then, since 2015 I’ve successfully filled every retained search I’ve been engaged on. Every one of them. 100% track record.” Again she said: “That’s brilliant, but not really what I’m after. What is it you do that is unique, that makes you stand out?” The pause was akin to Cathy Newmans interview with Jordan Peterson. 🤔💭🧐 Then with a smirk, not expecting to be treated seriously, I said: “Well I change people’s lives, for the better. Whether than be finding dream jobs for candidates (#CTOs or Tech Leaders), or making sure #CEOs, #Founders and #Investors have the right talent in the right roles at the right time to ensure their businesses have the best chance of being successful.” She laughed. “It’s too long winded Warren, but that’s your USP and Elevator Pitch rolled into one. Start with reaearch... New Year, New You? Tis the season for most folks to put out their radar for that next great opportunity and I'm all in for supporting your growth. But with so many employer options to choose from, where do you get started? I'm here to help. Start with research. Learn as much as you can about the company or organization you're looking for. So many people prioritize looking for the "job", but when I train students and job seekers, I encourage them to look for the company first. Do this and you may land a satisfying career instead. Don't research to GET in. Research to see if you WANT in. Start with the basics. Look up the company's Mission, Vision, and Values. Ask yourself if this is a company you can truly support and be proud of. Do the values of the company align with your own? If the answer is no, then you have your clear answer. Move on! Do you struggle to even find the company's MVV? Perhaps take it to mean those defining aspects of the company are not a priority. Move on! Ask company employees, even leadership, about their company's MVV, I do this all the time. If most employees can't recall the Mission or struggle telling you about the values, take this to also mean those aren't an organizational or strategic priority. Move on! Most every company has some form of established MVV, but I've found through my research, spanning two decades, very few live up to them. #CheeringYouForward, my friends! Steve C. #IEHP
