As Pride Month comes to an end, we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, not just this month, but every day, and are proud to highlight our teammates who support the community. 🏳️🌈 Today, we hear from Stacey about why it's important to both reflect and move forward together: “I think it is important to celebrate that we have the ability to love who we want to love and not feel ashamed by it. When I got married in 2021, I was able to celebrate with the person I chose in this life. I think we have more work to do to have people understand that I am the same as the next person: Love is Love!"

National Coming Out Day is an annual LGBTQIA+ awareness day observed on October 11 to support anyone "coming out of the closet". Hear from Omar Farías, VMD, Director of Scientific & Academic Affairs at Hill's, about what National Coming Out Day means to him: National Coming Out Day reminds me how privileged I am. I get to share with my world that I am an out and proud, cis gay man. But, coming out does not happen in a day, it is a process. A process, in which I had to learn to love myself first, and chose my happiness over everything else. It is also a reminder that not everyone is safe to come out in the environment in which they live, and that each individual chooses their own path. Days like these are important so that one day, everyone feels safe, and is safe to live their authentic life. Happy Pride month! I've been trying to write this post for ages, because my relationship with pride has always been odd. I dislike the version of pride that commercialised and has all the rough edges smoothed off. Yes we deserve to celebrate and be happy, but also we can do that in ways that are have less capitalism vibes. This is also a lil introduction/reminder: My name's Gem, I am bisexual and non-binary, and my pronouns are they/them. Let's talk about community. Since being self-employed I've found a lot of community with fellow queer folk. I've done some work with Sparkle (a trans charity), a queer arts market, and I co-work with a MCR based queer co-working group semi-regularly (I want to get back to that being actually regularly soon). Finding this community has been so important - going from working in a tight knit company to working solo was a big change, and being around other folks working has been vital for me. Spending more time around queer folk is important to me on multiple levels. It's a community I want to spend time serving, and engaging with, and being self-employed has given me time and opportunities to do so. It's also nice to feel belonging, and acceptance fully. It's not a place where some people will use my pronouns and some won't, generally. I can assume people will read my pronoun pin and use them. I don't actually mind being misgendered a lot of the time, because I wear dresses and people make assumptions, but being in a space where I can fully expect people to use the correct pronouns without correction is such a relief. This is why community is important, and why I want to support and serve communities where people can be together. Happy Pride, folks.

October 11 is National Coming Out Day. It is a day to recognize and celebrate what is a very significant, brave and vulnerable moment in the life of a person who identifies as LGBTQIA+. But coming out isn't a one-time thing. Individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ will come out multiple times in their life as they start new jobs, make new friends or introduce themselves in a variety of situations. If someone comes out to you, it is a sign that they believe you are a safe person to confide in. It is Pride month again! One thing I learnt this year was that the Q in LGBTQIA+ could as well be Questioning for an Ally. The journey from a bystander to an ally is not an Immediate transition. There are questions, debates, self doubt and survival instincts that kick in especially when it is time to take a stand or voice an opinion. Standing up for someone else is not easy! It takes practice. You may be at one of these many places: 1. From the LGBTQIA+ community dreading what this month is going to bring in the name of allyship 2. An active ally, walking on a thin line between fake pandering corporates and the real deal 3. A seasonal Ally who remembers having pledged to do more than add a rainbow to your display pic every Pride month 4. A new Ally, highly inspired to start a new journey. 5. A bystander wondering what the fuss is all about Wherever you are, you have my empathy. Because everyone is trying! Take one empathetic action this month that moves you closer to being an Active Ally and closer to creating an inclusive environment!
