Many of the answers could make sense, and kids need to consider which answer stands out. Practice this during read-alouds by giving multiple-choice questions after reading a chapter or ask kids to think about which theme or message has the best evidence from the text. #literacyeducation

Why the drift (or is it a push) towards authoritarian approaches in England's schools? Why did the National Tutoring Programme go wrong? What motivates today's teachers, and how can teaching history empower those who learn? Why is the government seemingly establishing a parallel system of 'alternative provision' for pupils and students designated as having Special Needs? How does Oak National Academy de-professionalise teachers? Contributors to the Spring number of 'Forum: for promoting 3 to 19 comprehensive education' explore these questions, and others equally pressing. They offer new thinking for an education service sorely in need of ways beyond the joyless test-readying deliverology which characterises so many classrooms. Have kids do The Thing. Pleasure reading during classroom instruction works. If it doesn't, it's a selection and/or classroom management issue. A large portion of upper grade struggling readers have decoding down. Fluency for common but complex vocab they orally know? Not so much. Complex but common words like 'information' could be read - but they had to stop and sound it out, and almost always without help. Often, they would get halfway through the syllables and recognize the word, say it fluently and move on. ❓Guess which of my 7/8 graders didn't have this problem: 🙋♂️ The students with a regular reading habit, (even if it tapered off as they hit their teens - quite common) Same K-6 reading instruction, same district, same teachers as their struggling classmates. As they say in the clip - kids need to do the thing the drills are prepping them for.
Give students time to do the thing—read! 📖🕰️ #LiteracyTalks S5E2 https://lnkd.in/gs78Ajf9
