Let’s walk the talk on diversity and inclusion for real. I had the great pleasure to discuss important questions with the Volvo Group V-EAGLE network for LGBTQAI+ members and allies earlier this week. In a nutshell: 👉 Why should LGBTQAI+ diversity matter in the workplace? - Because everyone should feel safe to come to work as who they are, feel safe at work, respected, and be included. 👉 In 2024, do you think our society has reached full inclusion in the workplace already? - No, unfortunately, in my view more work on this is needed. 👉 What tips can you give to people to become more inclusive colleagues and leaders? - Let’s respect everyone for who they are and include them. It is as simple as that. 👉 LGBTQAI+ people who don’t feel comfortable with being “out” in the workplace, what do you want to say to them? - Sometimes I am sure this can be easier said than done. With full respect for everyone who is not ready, or who does not want to, coming out is a personal choice. But if you want to come out and feel more ready, look for other members and allies – there are many to connect with. And join the LGBTQAI+ community in your workplace, to feel supported but also to support others. I would say that this could be a good starting point. 👉 You have consistently attended the Pride parade in Gothenburg every year since 2017. What was it that made you join the first West Pride parade, and what made you come back every year? - For me as a person, and as a leader, diversity and inclusion really matter. So, when I joined the Volvo Group in 2017, it was very natural for me to also join the West Pride parade in Gothenburg. Since then, many of my colleagues in the Volvo Group Executive Board have joined me. And we can see the number of LGBTQAI+ members and allies in the Group growing every year. In celebration of International Women’s Day, our board member Gabrielle Nater-Bass, moderator Carolin Roth and I discussed equal rights in business - broadcasted in real time to our LGT colleagues. My main takeaways from our engaging exchange: - The basis for success is psychological safety: Leaders and teams who give you the confidence to talk about your career openly and early on, about your fears, and issues that stand in your way. Only then can you be transparent. Only then can you truly work on solutions together. Only then can you team up and learn from each other. It’s never not possible, as Gabrielle has put so beautifully. Including having a career and a family. It’s up to you: Start thinking outside of the box, get creative, keep working on solutions together with your leaders, your teams, your partner, your family. - We need pioneers: Being a trailblazer may be tough, but sometimes people need someone to make them realise that the world is more open than they may think. Once you’re able to think it, you’re able to work for it - and achieve it. - Everyone profits from equal rights: A world in which everyone is given the same opportunities is a world in which the best work wins (no matter your identity). Diversity is a moral imperative, yes, but it’s also a business imperative. This was a great opportunity to get conversations going. As the Head of HR at MTU Maintenance, he's been instrumental in shaping a culture of diversity, particularly in supporting women in technical fields.   For HELIOVIS, setting up a gender board is not just a question of social responsibility, but a strategic imperative for building a resilient and successful company in the long term. This International Women's Day, I find myself truly inspired by the remarkable women and supportive allies who are pushing boundaries for positive change not only within the automotive industry but also across the globe. Each day, I witness the remarkable contributions and achievements of women across diverse roles and levels, ranging from engineering and design to sales and management. In an industry historically dominated by men, the increasing presence of women breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and reshaping the future of mobility and marketing is incredibly empowering. From pioneering new technologies to leading diverse teams, women are making their mark and propelling the industry forward. Organizations like Automotive Women's Alliance , Women In Automotive , Women Automotive Network , and Women of Color Automotive Network (WOCAN) are playing pivotal roles in attracting women to the industry from a young age. Reflecting on my journey in this field over the past two decades, I recall the scarcity of female mentors in dealerships. However, it's great to observe the increasing diversity within teams and the emergence of such supportive organizations. But let's not forget the importance of allies – the men who recognize the value of gender diversity and actively champion the women in their teams. Together, we can foster an inclusive culture where everyone has the opportunity to flourish and thrive. As we commemorate International Women's Day, let's not only celebrate the achievements of women within the automotive industry but across all sectors. Let's amplify their voices and work collectively towards a more equitable and diverse future. I take pride in supporting organizations that prioritize diversity at their core, inspiring the next generation by demonstrating that regardless of one's background or identity, there are avenues for advancement and support. I extend my gratitude to the incredible women who continue to blaze trails, challenging stereotypes, and reshaping our world. On our journey towards the best Infineon for everyone, we were voted again as "Diversity Leader" by Financial Times and Statista. For the fifth year in a row, we are happy to be ranked as one of the TOP 5!🏆🎉 And we want to thank everyone who took the time to give us feedback! Voting results are based on employees' perceptions of European companies' inclusiveness or efforts to promote aspects of #diversity. More than 100.000 employees from different companies and industry sectors participated in the survey. Diversity dimensions like age, gender, disability, or sexual orientation were evaluated by the participants, but also other indicators like companies' external communication regarding Diversity have been analyzed by Statista. At Infineon, we believe that people who are accepted at work and have a sense of belonging feel more comfortable in engaging. We would like our followers and the industry to think deeply beyond the buzzwords. Since 1967, Axel Springer has been guided by a set of core values that have helped shape the company's social responsibility throughout decades of social, political, and technological change. One of our "Essentials" stands out today, on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia: "We reject political and religious extremism and all forms of racism and sexual discrimination." International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia commemorates the World Health Organization's decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders on May 17, 1990. 34 years later, more than one-third of countries around the world still criminalize consensual same-sex acts between adults. 26 countries impose prison sentences of 10 years or more for same-sex sexual acts, and 11 countries even impose the death penalty. We’ve also seen anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric increase in some of the world’s largest democracies, including Poland, Hungary, India, South Korea, and the United States. As an openly gay man, I am proud to work for a company that supports and empowers me and many other LGBTQ+ colleagues to come to work as ourselves. Axel Springer not only stands up against discrimination on this day or during Pride Month but has done so throughout its 77-year history.
