If an all-male panel is called a 'Manel', what do you call an all-female panel? KIND OF AMAZING? It was such a dynamic panel session discussing 'Building a Skilled, Inclusive Workforce for the Transition and Beyond' at yesterday's Day 1 of the Power + Utilities Australia Leadership Summit. The conversation ranged from... the need to promote the energy industry as an industry of choice; the need to promote trade skills as a preferred post-high school career; the need to make sure organisations' culture both supports diversity through targets/collaboration/initiatives, but also just by having people in diversity represented across an organisation ('you can be it if you can see it'), the need to 'share the care' across families; the need to support/invest in/fund your employees to be part of training throughout their careers. It was great to get questions from the audience about how to familiarise students with the energy sector from high school (Cert II Career Starts!) and whether we can transition people into the sector (microcredentials for everyone!). There's a lot to be done, but as someone passionate about my industry, about teaching (I didn't lecture for a decade for nothing!) and about life-long learning, I think we've got this! Leadership thought for the day... Thanks #GaryGibson for inspiration... I attended a great course yesterday "Managing Team Attitudes and Expectations" taught by Upstream Academy's #JeremyClopton. One huge takeaway, among several, was... Being promoted to a Manager or Supervisor is not a Reward, but a Responsibility. I think this should be conveyed to... and confirmed "Understood" by all who move into these positions. It may be rewarding, but are you ready for the responsibility. When we take on these positions we are not just responsible for ourselves and our tasks but responsible for taking care of those who report to us and those tasks. "Not in my salary grade" is no longer a valid response... If it ever was...and I don't think so, per my opinion, agreeing to be an employee you took on the task of making the business successful, no matter what your role or what you do... OK, so back to managing, You now have the responsibility to fulfilling a larger business need that involves others in the big picture of things. Knowing is half the battle and going in with this understanding and attitude sets you up for success. "Go" and "Make" a Great Day...

This week saw me join a panel discussion on how British Coatings Federation and the wider chemical supply chain can look to find future leaders for the industry. Just some of the key takeouts I noted: - Coatings is a hugely diverse sector and its much more than lab coats and boiler suits. - The need to drive a conscious recognition for just how large an effect the industry has on our everyday lives, as well as leveraging the power of colour. - Looking at the financials, manufacturing is a really well paid sector to get involved in and often offers careers for life. - Companies have to instil ‘High support; High Challenge’ principles to nurture talent. - Attitude is a key attribute for young talent looking to join the industry. One challenge for the audience to takeaway: - Over the next few weeks block out just one hour in the diary to support the development of someone in their team or department who they would not otherwise reach out to. And remember my golden rules when it comes to mentoring: - Ask questions; - Shut up and engage your active listening; - Be inquisitive as everyone has something to teach us.

“An emphasis on long-term thinking and core value propositions keeps them grounded.” As someone who has Strategic as a top strength, coming back to long-term thinking and rooted in org values is important to developing and launching the ‘right’ kinds of initiatives. Sometimes my desire to ask questions, create alignment might slow the process down a bit. Very interesting when you dig into the way this has changed...and I'm sure even more so since 2020. "Creativity" alone has jumped from last on the list to #3. "Complex Problem Solving" holds the top spot as a consistently needed skill in the world/job market. As an educational enrichment leader, is our team creating content and experiences that provide meaningful opportunities for life-skill development without sacrificing the wonder and enjoyment of childhood? Something to ponder... A question for industry leaders on here: What skills do you see as needed most from young adults entering the job market for the first time?

The conversation of producing "great" leaders starts with producing great culture for aspiring thinkers to succeed safely. The most important variable in this equation is people. Businesses that recognize the unique nuances of their industry; how their talent learns, what their company rewards, and whose lead should be followed all determine what quality of leader you get in return. Great leaders all share one common trait, they embrace failure because it is the critical key to growth. I believe we should provide our up and coming leaders with a 'safe space to fail'. Great topic!
