Tons of thanks Kevin L. Brown for sharing this with us. I think the challenge lies in the interconnectedness of many social problems. But it would help to distinguish between problems that require our immediate response (such as humanitarian issues e.g., tsunami, mud-/-landslides, floods, drought, famine and pandemic like Ebola, COVID-19, among others) and those problems that can be dealt with after proper assessment such good governance related issues, especially if thereโs no war nor an indication of it in the country in question. And l completely agree that impact will suffer if we rush in implementing development projects before carrying-out an in-depth situation analysis. With every good wish, Alice Mapenzi Kubo.
A problem well stated is half solved. But we see it all the time: Nonprofits and foundations try to address too many issues at once. And try to serve too many community needs via one (small) organization. So missions are scattered. Programs go unfocused. Comms get confusing. Messaging is unclear. Fundraising falters. Leaders burn out. Impact suffers. And growth stunts. Thatโs why nailing a precise problem statement is the very first exercise in our entire Four Aโs #brand framework. Day one workshop for every new client โ it all starts here. Even with months ahead of positioning #strategy and #marketing communications, we know without a singular, bold problem statement โ the brand will not thrive. Then funding will not be maximized. Because that same problem statement becomes the hook in your elevator pitch. The opening slide of your deck. The first thing you say in a funding application. Even the header of your website. So whatโs your problem? Can you recite it in a single line? Is it a locked-down paragraph on paper? Anything is possible, but everything is not. And specificity isnโt a limitation.
