In good times and in difficult times, your alumni relationships can be a game changer and helping hand. You need to invest in building alumni relationships from your first day on campus, through one on one interactions and keeping in touch, building the relationship and most importantly, expressing gratitude for the mentorship and help. Alumni are on campus throughout the year. A few hundred alumni will be on campus for Nostalgia 2023 from 3-5 November with multiple opportunities for students to interact with alumni. Take the initiative to go up to alumni and introduce yourself and start a conversation. Don't know what to say? Don't be nervous - alumni love talking to current students! Ask: - which year and programme they are from - what their happiest memories from campus are - what they are doing now - whether they would like you to show them around campus Tell them - about yourself and some unique things about you - interests, talents, etc - that will make them remember you - what your career interests are and what big questions on your mind are Ask them if you can keep in touch and request them for their contact details. Follow up with a *personalized* LinkedIn connection request - "Hello (alum name), it was very nice meeting you on campus at (Nostalgia 2023). I really liked your insights and advice on (topic). I would like to keep in touch. (your name)". Over the course of our careers, a big differentiator becomes the strength of one's alumni network and the personal relationships one has. There is a lot going on campus. But don't forget to invest in building your alumni network - it is your single biggest asset over the course of your career. #iimkalumnipower

A simple yes can lead to a quality time. This morning I had an insightful conversation with Pehovelo Nghaamwa via Zoom, all thanks to her lovely message via LinkedIn wanting to connect and share our experiences in mentoring/career development. We talked about our career journey leading up to our current occupation and how to be successful career development practitioners in Vietnam and Namibia, which to no surprise, a very promising field with great potentials while also maintaining its own challenge in educating young students in career exploration and preparation. Thinking back to my college time, it is quite regretful and ironic that I haven't utilized much of my career center at UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management for my own professional development back then, and now working in the field that supporting students in finding their own career journey. During the time working at Metropolitan Community College-Kansas City and RMIT University Vietnam as career consultant, I have encountered many stories and backgrounds from students which left me such impactful lessons in my own career development, and that I know from my heart this helping profession is my true calling - to be able to give and help, is truly fulfilling. The conversation with Peho this morning, in a way, allows me to reflect and believe in this quote once more: "Success is not just making money. Success is happiness, is fulfillment and it's the ability to give". #careerdevelopment #fulfillment #lifepurpose
