As an airline pilot, I can tell you that technology fails, even on the flight deck. Putting increased trust in autonomous systems creates an overreliance on systems that could fail—or be hacked—and requires more complex interactions between systems and pilots. Technology fails, but there are so many more unforseen failures that have required a two (some have benefited from “extra hands”) person crew in order to save the day. The “Miracle on the Hudson” should be SHOVED in the face of every advocate of reduced crew. Sioux City is another great example of why we NEED at least two pilots up front. Someone should get an AI engine to TRY and do as good as those crews did. My money is on Capt. Haynes and Capt. Sullenberger.
