[Green hospital starts with carbon reduction]
Hong Kong’s waste charging will be implemented on April 1 to encourage all walks of life to change their garbage-generating behaviours, thereby enhancing waste reduction. Among different types of wastes, plastic litter is particularly related to global warming. The process of refining, manufacturing, and disposing of plastic will produce greenhouse gases and affect climate change.
In fact, MSF has always been concerned about the health impacts of climate change, so we strive to reduce carbon footprint to minimise the impact to the nature. For example, we installed solar panels on the roof of Al Mowasah Hospital in Amman, Jordan, to achieve the concept of energy efficiency. Also, the hospital waste is no longer dumped randomly, but is sorted into different categories. 54% of non-medical waste is now recycled and reused, hoping to reduce waste at the source.
Whether in Hong Kong or elsewhere, if you want to contribute to protecting the environment, what you need is practical determination and time to adapt and adjust! Al Mowasa Hospital's "Go Green" project took 1.5 year to achieve satisfactory results, and now it became a green role model in the eyes of the Jordanian authorities. MSF has committed to reducing global CO2 emissions by at least half of 2019 emissions by 2030. We will continue to work hard and implement more green measures.
