Australia is experiencing 10,000 fires in its waste system a year due to improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries. “If we don’t act on this, we’re going to continue to see facilities and trucks burn, we’re going to end up potentially with genuine injuries or significant injuries on our workers, and, dare I say, a death, which is what we’re trying to avoid,” said Gayle Sloan, Chief Executive of Australia's Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association. “We’re not going to find people having their materials and rubbish collected when they want it to, because the services will become unaffordable.” Read more via Interesting Engineering: https://lnkd.in/eGN9Bixz #batterysafety #batteryfire #lithiumion #batterytechnology

The recent reports of over 10,000 fires a year in Australia caused by lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) raise significant safety concerns. These highly flammable batteries are integral to almost every modern device, yet they pose substantial fire risks, especially when improperly disposed of. Lithium-ion batteries are energy-dense and contain materials that can easily ignite, leading to severe fires, explosions, and chemical hazards. This risk is particularly pronounced in waste management, where mishandled batteries can cause devastating fires in trucks and facilities. In response to these dangers, there is an urgent call for more safe drop-off points for batteries. This is essential to prevent them from being mixed with general waste, which can trigger sudden fires. Australia’s waste management sector highlights the need for immediate action to avoid potential tragedies, including injuries and deaths. At Cenergy, we recognize these risks and advocate for safer, more sustainable energy storage solutions. Redox Flow Batteries (RFB) offer a promising alternative to LiBs for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Unlike lithium-ion batteries, RFBs operate at lower temperatures, significantly reducing the risk of fire and explosion. They also provide longer lifespans and are more environmentally friendly, addressing both safety and sustainability concerns. Our work at Cenergy focuses on advancing RFB technology to offer reliable and secure energy storage solutions. By leveraging our innovative research and strategic partnerships, we aim to lead the transition towards safer energy storage systems. This tragic trend underscores the need for a shift in how we approach energy storage. Embracing technologies like RFBs can mitigate risks and pave the way for a safer, more resilient energy future. #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #SafetyFirst #LDES #RedoxFlowBatteries #Innovation #Sustainability #Cenergy #EnergySolutions #CleanEnergy https://lnkd.in/gURFE9EB

“Saving the world, one blade at a time”. Yesterday, we tossed this slogan around at a company meeting. Others were discussed, but this one stuck with me. You see, according to a 2017 study published in the scientific journal Waste Management, the world’s wind industry will be producing 43 MILLION tons of blade waste annually by 2050. The US alone will make up approximately 30-50% of this waste. Most blades currently end up in landfills, creating a devasting ecological impact and wasting valuable resources. If this process were to continue until 2050, the impact would be catastrophic. At Pitbull Shredding Solutions, our mission is to change this. Instead of letting valuable resources be buried, we partnered with REGEN Fiber to produce high-quality rebar; we specialize in shredding and recycling the blades into products that can be utilized across numerous industries. We see a future with less environmental impact, a reduced carbon footprint, and lowered costs for waste management utilities. Pitbull truly is saving the world, one blade at a time. Our current waste management practices are costing us more than just money. We're also wasting precious resources, throwing away potential value, and damaging our environment in the process. At Varme, we're on a mission to change that. This means we’re determined to extract every ounce of value from our waste. Here’s how. ⬇️ ⚡️We generate clean energy by combusting the waste in our state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facilities. 🌳 We capture carbon emissions and sequester them underground to generate carbon credits. ♻️ We separate metals using advanced magnet separators, recirculating them back into the economy. 🏗 We collect the ash from combustion and repurpose it as a cement replacement, making building materials stronger and more carbon-dense. It’s time to stop throwing away the value of our waste into landfills. Together, we can turn waste into opportunity. #wastetoenergy #wte #efw #energyfromwaste #carboncapture #carboncredits #cleanenergy #cleanelectricity

Meaning,it is needed to plan also correct #reverselogistics for #lithiumbatteries as they are #dangerousgoods even after being used and being almost empty of #electricity .Also then they need #transport to some #recycling in safe way. Hopefully new #batterypassport concerns also that aspect in some way?

Throwing away Lithium-ion batteries - products, in the general waste is now creating many issues, we should have a national campaign to stop this ever increasing issue: Key points: 1. Its a major fire risk for the refuse workers, and FRS. 2. Its now costing millions in terms of fires! And it will increase 3. Its a complete waste of materials 4. ACOR Media Release: Battery Fires a Burning Issue for Recyclers this Holiday Season. One year on from a battery fire that destroyed a recycling facility in Australia’s capital city, ACOR is overwhelmingly concerned about increasing incidents involving the incorrect disposal of #batteries causing property damage, serious injury and death—with these expected to increase over the holiday period. As the peak body for #resourcerecovery, #recycling and #remanufacturing in Australia, ACOR has today released 'A Burning Issue: Navigating the battery crisis in Australia's recycling sector', outlining recommendations for the escalating hazards posed by loose and embedded #batteries in conventional waste and recycling streams. I can't begin to count the number of #consumerproducts that contain #batteries - including musical greeting cards, power tools, e-bikes, wireless headphones, digital thermometers, electric toothbrushes, remote control cars, cordless vacuum cleaners, electronic toys, mobile phones, tablets, vapes and so very many more. As we approach the gift-giving excitement of Christmas - and the extra waste that ensues - please take extra care to make sure that no loose or embedded batteries are placed in conventional waste or recycling bins. Doing so can result in serious injury or death for workers, disastrous damage to waste and recycling operations, and environmental pollution from facility fires. Loose and embedded batteries must be disposed of at specific collection points - not in regular bins. Whilst we urge governments to roll out a much more comprehensive network of safe collection points and ensure that producers take responsibility for the risk these items carry, please check Recycle Mate for your nearest drop off point.

🔥 A study by the National Waste and Recycling Association highlights a concerning 41% increase in catastrophic fire losses at recycling facilities over the last five years. More than 5,000 fires occur annually, with a growing number linked to lithium-ion batteries mistakenly placed in recyclables by consumers. This trend poses a significant risk to recycling facilities, impacting insurance costs and potentially leading to regulatory changes. The report emphasizes the need for better fire detection, vigilance, and industry-wide initiatives to manage the escalating threat of lithium-ion battery fires in waste and recycling systems. #BatteryFires #RecyclingSafety #WasteManagement 🔄🔍 https://lnkd.in/gjizNRGn
