Life extension and plant aging management are paramount concerns in today's efforts to expand the utilization of nuclear energy. A crucial aspect for enabling additional operational years in existing facilities is practical applied research on materials and their durability. Part of the international effort to explore these possibilities is carried out through SMILE (Studsvik Material Integrity Life Extension), a collaborative OECD/NEA international project operated by Studsvik. This week, we are gathering material experts from around the world at another SMILE Meeting to review and discuss critical data and mechanistic understanding of material aging mechanisms. This supports plant aging management, life extension programs, and operating license renewals, providing invaluable insights for operators and authorities, particularly as the landscape is changing.
