A new policy allows states to offer Medicaid health insurance before release from prison, improving their health outcomes and reducing racial disparities. The Problem: - Incarcerated people often have chronic health conditions but lack insurance upon release. - This gap in care leads to worse health outcomes, with a high risk of death in the first few weeks after release. - People of color are disproportionately impacted by incarceration, further widening health disparities. The Solution: States can now apply for waivers to extend Medicaid coverage to inmates at least 30 days before release. This allows for: - Case management: Develop a personalized health plan for each person. - Appointments: Schedule medical and mental health appointments for after release. - Medication: Provide a one-month supply of essential medication. Nearly 30% of all federal inmates reported having at least one disability, according to the latest Bureau of Justice Statistics. That number is even higher for women, with 40% of female federal prisoners reporting a disability. Considering that individuals with disabilities are twice as likely to develop other conditions such as depression, diabetes, stroke, obesity and poor oral health – conditions that are already higher among inmate populations – the need for healthcare becomes increasingly apparent. There are many factors at play but low reimbursement which has an effect on recruitment and retention is a continual problem for the field. Parity won't work if no one is around to provide the behavioral health service that parity is supposed to support. There are millions of ARPA and opioid settlement funds waiting to be spent. #behavioralhealthcare #mentalhealthmatters #parity #behavioralhealth https://lnkd.in/gExwwHJS

NANS has led a multi-society response to Washington State Health Care Authority on its review of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) evidence. Washington State is the only entity in the US and Western Europe that does not approve SCS for any diagnosis for any patient with insurance covered by the Health Care Authority, a decision affecting about 2.5 million Washingtonians. This situation has lasted for more than 12 years. 🌟 Findings from research 👇 : #Medicaid expansion increased health insurance coverage for individuals with criminal legal involvement and mental health issues. Yet, it didn't lead to more treatment for substance use or mental disorders. 🏥💊 Access to insurance alone isn't sufficient; targeted strategies are needed for better care. #HealthcareImpact #MedicaidExpansion https://lnkd.in/gRhxFcK5

Update on #copayaccumulators: In response to a lawsuit filed by the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute, the Diabetes Leadership Council (DLC), and the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition (DPAC), the U.S. District Court has restored a federal rule banning most copay accumulators. This means insurers must apply #copayassistance to patient deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. This ruling is a victory for the #PIcommunity but could be appealed. IDF is working to ban copay accumulators in all 50 states & pass the federal HELP Copays Act so that #AllCopaysCount across all #healthinsurance plans, PERIOD. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Q4QDPO.

Social Services Organizations Seeking a Trusted Risk Management and Insurance Advisor: Addiction Treatment, Child Care, Schools, IDD Service Providers, Home Healthcare, Family Services, Mission Sending Organizations
One of the most common claims I experience with my clients is an accusation of lack of care. A caregiver isn’t paying attention while a person in the program wanders off. A teacher isn’t paying attention while a child hurts themselves. An outpatient program doesn’t elevate the level of care needed for an out patient program. The consequences can be quite serious. I was reminded of this while reading an article in Disability Scoop. #insurance #negligence #serviceproviders #daycare #school #mentalhealth
