As one chapter closes with my journey as a PhD student, a new one unfolds: Now officially a PhD candidate! Embarking on this academic journey has often felt like navigating a vast and unpredictable sea. Initially, my ship was set on a specific course, charted out with precision and purpose. However, there were moments when the tides of research ebbed away from my favor, requiring me to abandon my initial vessel and take command of a new ship under the guidance of a new captain. It wasn't a simple shift; I had to abandon familiar waters and steer into uncharted territory with a new topic and a new guide at the helm. Yet, every storm I weathered along this course has only reinforced my vessel, making it more resilient and robust. The challenges, though daunting, have been instrumental, teaching me to harness the winds of adversity and use them to propel forward. Embrace the storms, for they shape the most formidable captains. Grateful for the lessons, the mentors, and the journey. Here's to the next chapter of this incredible voyage! #PhD_research

I'm thrilled to share that I'm returning to New York University as an adjunct faculty member, teaching a new graduate course, "Astropolitik: The Politics, Policies, and Technologies of Outer Space." In 2019, although I had no formal STEM background and I felt I was a non-traditional applicant, Colorado School of Mines' Dr. Angel Abbud-Madrid encouraged me to apply to the Space Resources program, recognizing the importance of diverse academic backgrounds in the growing space economy. He and the Space Resources faculty, including Dr. George Sowers and Dr. Christopher Dreyer, are exceptional leaders in the industry and I am humbled to have studied with them. Watching my peers develop complex engineering projects, launch their own space businesses, and work professionally developing rockets, landers, and rovers, was eye-opening. Their rigorous, data-backed approach to tackling complex and costly challenges should be adopted across industries, especially as society scales and deploys climate technology; there are so many valuable lessons to learn from the space sector and I'm excited to share these with my students. I am also unbelievably grateful to mentor and friend, Dr. Carolyn Kissane, who positively changed the trajectory of my career and life when I was an NYU student. Some people see what you are capable of even when you can’t see it yourself, and I would not be where I am today without her. The best part about the new space economy is it's not limited to folks with STEM backgrounds -- in addition to scientists and engineers, we need policymakers, communicators, investors, (everyone!) to develop space-literacy so we can tap into the vast opportunities presented by deeper exploration and utilization of our solar system. I am thrilled to get back into the classroom next spring, but this time, on the other side of the lectern. 🚀📚🌟 NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs #Astropolitik #NYUCGA #SpaceEducation #GlobalAffairs #Astropolitics #ISRU #SpaceResources https://lnkd.in/gJx_BRif

There's a certain tendency in #highered #pedagogy to assert that greater #student engagement and improved #learning outcomes demand novel methods of #innovativeteaching. And often that's true. But let's not forget the #impact of tried&true formats like the #tutorial to deliver on the promise of interactive & #personalizededucation. #backtobasics
"Being out and about, and interacting with things that we have learnt about in lectures is immensely valuable. I think it grounds you and reminds you that what you are learning about is real and affects creatures in their day-to-day lives.” Tutorials – a meeting between an academic and a small number of students – are the cornerstone of the highly personalised undergraduate teaching and learning experience at Oxford. Find out more about Prof Turnbull's tutorial at Oxford's University Museum of Natural History. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e34uCXiF
