It's Fieldays week! If you can squeeze in the time, then I encourage you all to visit. I have a deep connection (past Board member, Innovations judge - and more...). But regardless of the past, I get such a kick out visiting each year. First, seeing this years' innovations - the gift that keeps growing (puns always intended). Clever people and technology adding value to NZInc. As a patent attorney it is particularly gratifying to see the commercial version of what you first came across as a raw concept, and as an IP strategist, it is such a pleasure to see how inventors and companies position themselves. Next, I am reminded how we are all interconnected in the Agritech space and how it underpins NZ's economic fabric. We all depend upon and support each other. Last - mussel fritters! If you are on the parade route: You will probably be busy with folks before the parade, then you will be dead once the duck boats are in sight and a mad rush after the boats are no longer visible. Many of these people just want a restroom and water, how you choose to deal with that is important. Parade day they may be a nuisance but the rest of the year they or their connections are your guests have a plan let your team know what that plan is but be prepared to adapt. If you are not on the parade route but are on a pedestrian route near a T stop or on the way to or from one: You too will have to deal with the post-parade traffic at what could be an odd time for your team, you may fill up with folks looking to have a "light lunch" and watch the parade on the TV's if you have them. Those folks may linger and have an extra beverage or two. Be prepared for an odd flow of traffic through the day as folks tire of being in the sun and start to head back to their home turf. Have a plan for how the day shift team will deal with folks who have had one too many Gansetts, this is something they may not have the experience that your night side team has. True Story: I was introduced to Troy Bonde back in the early Fall of 2022 as he was finishing up at USC Marshall School of Business. And according to his accounting professor, he "was an ok student and he occasionally showed up for class", but had an idea to market a pasta sauce and asked if I would meet with him as a favor. #pastasauce! What do you do during the seasonal drop in sales? Both of our locations are in tourist towns, we have high summer traffic and crazy low winter sales. We opened Joes on the Beach at the end of September and by mid October we could see that we would need to do something to drive bums in seats. Even if we managed the costs, had we not done something we would not have made it through the winter. Our very first event was lobsterfest ( I know rather predictable but it did the trick) Even better was what this did to our cheque average. So we knew that given what we knew about sales trends in town that we would be ok over Christmas, but e would need to do something in January. What we learned from lobster was that we would need to find a low food cost item to create an event around. What we create was Autobahn, Where Joe’s does a tour of German food + Drink. It was so popular that this year is our 2nd annual event. Low food cost, high traffic resulted in cash flow and happy staff. #localbusiness #lobsterfest #event

Saturday, April 6, was not the second Saturday of the month despite the Urbana Chamber of Commerce beginning its 2024 Second Saturday series of street fairs. Although I learned this is the second year for this series of events, it was my first time participating. I've signed up for four more such dates in this year's series of street fairs for basically two reasons: low cost registration and proximity. The day dawned chilly and sunny. We managed to avoid rain, although the clouds moved in by noon and a cold breeze picked up. Pedestrian traffic was light and sales were nonexistant until after noon. The lemonade stand beside us did a brisk business. I spoke with other vendors, one selling cupcakes and cookies and another selling fishing tackle. They mentioned low traffic, poor location, and few sales. Three of the food trucks near us left early, one by 1 p.m. and the other two before 3 p.m. The event officially ended at 6 p.m., but by 5:15, the sidewalks were deserted. So, we left. We couldn't sell anything to people who weren't there, and we were cold, despite having dressed for the weather in insulating layers. The upshot? I recouped my expenses and then some, actually making a small profit. The chilly, overcast weather deterred much of the expected pedestrian traffic. My booth's location wasn't great, but it wasn't as poor as it could have been. Being located a block south or even in the town square would have been much better. Our lesson learned is basically a lesson reinforced: My ability to predict anything does not work. Here's to hoping that May's Second Saturday event will be better ... or at least warmer.
