After this interview, my new learning is: From real data, AI-focused companies may be able to rapidly gain traction and generate millions in revenue within their first few months of operations, if they create solutions that meet real market needs. This emerging landscape could potentially enable nimble startups with skilled AI teams to pursue unicorn valuations more efficiently. However, significant risk and uncertainty remain. Overall, the application of AI does seem to be reshaping dynamics in the early funding world from seed to series A. Three-quarters of the largest U.S. companies founded in the past 50 years would not have existed or achieved their current scale without VC support. What makes VCs effective is the venture mindset, which is characterized by several key principles: the individual over the group, disagreement over consensus, exceptions over dogma, and agility over bureaucracy. Guided by these principles, VCs speed up decision-making and prevent groupthink from torpedoing unconventional opportunities. Ultimately, VCs don’t worry about protecting capital from failures and losses. At BlueTreeVC, we say we are a "Rational Capital" VC fund, and we often get asked what that means. For me, that starts with investing in the right management team. And for our fund, that means focusing on gritty, diverse founders who make strategic rather than tactical decisions. Gritty because our geographic focus is in the Rust Belt, which has a plethora of entrepreneurial talent but limited available funds. Without predictable access to growth capital, successful founders in this region need to build a fundamentally strong business first, before focusing on explosive growth. Thus, we need to invest in founders who understand the limitations of this region and make strategic decisions based on these limitations. We invest in diversity because everyone had blind spots. The more diversity within the leadership team, paired with strong, mutual respect, the fewer blind spots the team as a whole has. The successful entrepreneurs we invest in are attacking known problems in a novel way by breaking assumptions of the status quo. Diverse perspectives allow leadership teams to identify and challenge assumptions while also better addressing the unintended consequences of breaking these assumptions.
