Hey all you 🫵 #Microsoft365Dev! As the months tick by, Microsoft is making #MicrosoftTeams the center of gravity even more for custom development in the #Microsoft365 landscape. A Microsoft Teams app is a Microsoft 365 app! Depending on what you create, it can run not just in the Microsoft Teams clients, but also in #SharePoint Online, #Outlook, the Microsoft 365 apps, and more! Want to learn more? Join me in Stockholm this December for ESPC 2024! Last year in Amsterdam, I was honored to pick up the award for “Best Online Courses”. This year, I’m talking about two things: Microsoft Teams app development & #SharePointEmbedded! Join me for a full-day pre-conference instructor-led workshop learning the “ins & outs” of creating Microsoft Teams apps. You’ll learn how to create tabs, bots, and message extensions AND how to use Teams apps to customize Copilot! But that’s not all, in my breakout session I’ll talk about a hot and exciting service from Microsoft that gives developers the ability to use SharePoint as their app’s document storage solution using SharePoint Embedded! You’ll learn what you can do, how to set it up, and how to read and write documents to your SharePoint Embedded Containers! Join in me to talk about building apps for #Microsoft365 using #MicrosoftTeams native full-stack development techniques! Many people jump to Power Apps, and while they work great in many scenarios, they aren't ideal for enterprise or LOB apps, plus you have to deal with messy governance & costly licensing. I'm looking forward to joining Michal Pisarek & Orchestry for an upcoming webinar to discuss this... and I want to make sure I cover your questions! What questions do you have about this approach? What frustrations are you running into with #PowerApps? Share them in the comments so I can make sure they're addressed in this webinar!

I couldn't have said it any better than my friends at Orchestry 👇 Microsoft has given customers multiple ways to create apps in Microsoft 365, including the #SharePointFramework and #PowerApps... ☝️ But one often overlooked option is native #MicrosoftTeams app development. Want to learn more? Join me next week for my webinar with Michal Pisarek and Orchestry where we discuss this option... it might be a better path forward for your next app!

"You can build an app more quickly using Power Apps and get it in the hands of your users, often faster than if you built it as a custom app, such as one that runs within Microsoft Teams or as a Microsoft 365 app. However, all those users must be licensed for Power Apps, and those licensing costs are ongoing. Of course Microsoft loves this because it provides an ongoing monthly source of revenue! Power Platform licensing is hugely profitable for Microsoft… no wonder just about every field office has Power Platform licensing specialist! But, these same licensing challenges don’t exist when you build full stack apps, for instance Microsoft Teams apps or Microsoft 365 apps. The costs, both in time & money, are skewed towards the construction phase of the app and not in ongoing licensing costs."

You might think I don't like Power Apps, but that’s not true. My point in this article is to simply push back on Power Apps being the answer to every solution. Over the last year, I’ve heard from more and more customers who went all in on Power Apps and have different levels of frustration from licensing to app management, maintenance, deployment, and dealing with complexity. The problem: they weren’t aware of the costs or other options for building apps for Microsoft 365. Miss this article earlier this week? My newsletter subscribers didn’t! YESSS. Good topic and perspective from Andrew Connell on his article. Custom/Teams apps are absolutely something that should be considered as part of a larger approach when PP is involved - for exactly the reasons AC mentions. Both licensing confusion *and* the actual costs for some orgs. In many cases, knowledge of one, or both, are missing (PP and Teams Dev) or inadequate so they don't know where to start in figuring it out. In some cases, PP might be a great place to start, to model data, to test and refine user needs, requirements, and functionality and then evaluate the solution for a migration or redo with custom dev. At that point a lot of the requirements are better defined (by going through a design process with PP) so custom work can proceed with fewer changes or scope creep. Unfortunately, finding the balance between PP and custom apps is more nuanced and more challenging - so orgs take the easier path (shorter term) of one path or the other - losing the advantages of the other.

Using single part app pages in SharePoint Online Single part app pages provide a capability to host SharePoint Framework web parts or Microsoft Teams applications in SharePoint Online with a locked layout. End users cannot modify or configure the page that is using the Single Part App Page layout. App pages have following characteristics: *Single Part App Pages cannot be edited by end users using a browser *Currently supports hosting only single web part or Microsoft Teams application *End users can create new app pages using the New > Page experience available in modern sites. *Developers can change page layout programmatically from normal page layout to a Single Page App Page * End users can create new Article pages or Single Page App pages by using the New/page experience present in the ribbon of any modern article pages.
