A perfect match: hydropower plants & water electrolysis thyssenkrupp To produce green hydrogen, sustainable electricity must be used for the manufacturing process. In addition to wind and solar energy, this can also be obtained from hydropower. To turn the version of a modern water electrolysis plant for the production of hydrogen on an industrial scale into reality, thyssenkrupp is working with the Canadian company Hydro Québec. Together they aim to produce the energy carrier of tomorrow in a sustainable way. With around 61 hydropower plants, Hydro-Québec is one of the biggest producers of electrical energy from hydropower. And thus produces large quantities of green electricity. Good conditions, therefore, for positioning a modern water electrolysis plant for the production of H2 on an industrial scale. "The project with Hydro-Québec is an excellent illustration of the importance of combining, on the one hand, secure access to competitive renewable energy and, on the other, the use of scaled technology for hydrogen production," says Denis Krude, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers. Today is Global Hydropower Day! 💧 Hydropower is the worlds largest source of renewable energy generation representing 16% of the total global electricity production including conventional. 💡 Some countries are taking a pioneering role in this, such as the Scandinavian countries. Did you know that they have the lowest European energy prices and 40% of energy is generated only by hydropower? 🌊 Scandinavia is an important market for #Voith, and we recognize the significant importance of hydropower in this region. A prime example of this is the Øvre Forsland hydropower plant, which showcases the harmonious relationship between nature and technology through its unique architecture and #innovative technology. As a main contributor to this project, Voith delivered 2 Francis turbines to the plant. The medium-sized plant produces around 33 GWh annually. This is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and our ability to provide our customers with the highest quality products.   The global hydropower market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2022 to 2028, driven by the increasing demand for clean and renewable energy sources. Europe is a major market for hydropower, with over 21,000 existing plants and many more planned or under construction.   The forged parts that we will be supplying for this project will be used in the turbines and other critical components of the hydropower plant. These parts must be strong, durable, and able to withstand the harsh operating conditions of a hydropower plant. 🌊 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 from Vogelgrun Hydropower Plant! 🌍 The Vogelgrun hydropower plant on the Rhine River (France) is making waves in sustainable energy innovation! They're currently testing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to boost plant flexibility and minimize wear and tear effects. 🇪🇺💼 Vogelgrun, a 142 MW run-of-river hydropower facility with four low head Kaplan turbines, is part of the XFLEX HYDRO initiative, a European Union-funded project driving energy innovation. One of its turbines has been hybridized with a BESS, thanks to the collaboration of 19 organizations across France, Portugal, and Switzerland. 💡🔄 XFLEX HYDRO showcases the potential of smart hydropower technologies in creating a low-carbon, reliable, and resilient power system. 📈 The Vogelgrun XFLEX HYDRO team has been rigorously testing the hybrid since May 2021 with early results showing a faster response time compared to the standalone hydro unit. Ongoing studies are assessing reduced wear and tear on the turbine. The main goal of the demonstration is to hybridize the turbine unit with a BESS to enhance its ability to provide primary frequency response to the electricity grid and significantly reduce turbine wear. The mainly digital upgrades of XFLEX HYDRO represent a shift from traditional, hardware-focused #modernisation initiatives. By enhancing the ability of #hydropowerplants to provide not only baseline and peak power but also crucial #gridstability services, the project has uncovered new potential value.
