Wrapping up two days serving on the judging panel for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Heartland region - what an inspiring set of conversations with more than two dozen finalists - and just, wow. 🎉 From companies building in healthcare to manufacturing to energy to retail brands and more. The set of winners coming out of this will advance to the national competition. Here are 4 takeaways from our interviews: 1) Leadership: starts at top. The best leaders risk more, expect, more, push hard. Transformation requires clear vision, and communication of the *why* to bring people alongside in transformative change. 2) Constraint breeds creativity - an adage I learned early on in my time at Google, and a theme that resonated in every conversation we had. The impact of the covid-19 pandemic, economic constraints of the last couple years, health challenges, fires -- these entrepreneurs have been battled tested, dug deep and pivoted to meet the market moment. 3) Tech-enablement and AI are a core conversation across all sectors and industries (with human at the center or human in the loop!). 4) The Heartland region rocks. I already knew that - but truly seeing the impact of these businesses solving some of the toughest challenges on the planet from supply chain logistics to the future of manufacturing to mental health to access to translation services driving billions in revenue and tens of thousands of jobs. It makes sense that these solutions would be birthed in the middle of the country with innovation flowing out from the heartland. Corporate life ey? It offers stability, structure, money and progression. Sometimes. Perfect for many. I worked in Banking for 5 years starting my career at UBS. My father was the Chief Economist as it happens (lucky me) and even though he tried many routes for me (I was forever grateful) I just wasn't cut out for it. Startup/Scaleup life ey? We all know that's totally different but here are some of the things I love about it: 🏄🏻 It's a ride and a journey and it's pretty dam exciting. 🔎 No day is the same and that keeps me on my toes. 👜 Ownership, autonomy and a voice that's just not the same in corporate. 👉🏾👈🏿 Selling something new to someone and making a difference. The list goes on but what I really really love is being the 'underdog'. 6 years ago a man called Nelson Sivalingam took a bet on me, I took a bet on him and I helped him build HowNow. What I really enjoyed was being the unknown, the one nobody knew about and proving everyone wrong. Going from the last kid in the playground to be picked to the first. That felt good and like nothing I'd ever felt before. Giving shout outs to the 'underdogs' who I believe will be a force and prove everyone wrong... I’ve recently been doing a lot more work with private equity owned companies, and to be honest, it’s been a nice change from the VC-backed ecosystem. Private equity firms take a much more strategic and targeted approach when it comes to the companies they invest in, as the goal is to turn a profit from every investment they make. Even when their portfolio companies are small, there’s generally a professional maturity to the leadership that is sometimes lacking in the startup world. I’ve also been struck by how the PE firms themselves have matured in recent years: it used to only be about the numbers. It’s still mostly about the numbers, but it seems a lot of them have come to recognize that the numbers are ultimately a lagging reflection of the quality of the portfolio company’s leadership, team alignment, and culture, so they’ve become much more willing to invest in these areas. So I feel like I’ve been ‘vibing’ well with PE firms recently - they appreciate my niche more often, and we generally see eye to eye on most issues, perhaps because of my earlier careers in consulting and private equity. It’s an ironic full circle - I went into coaching originally as a response to my time at TowerBrook Capital, one of the top PE firms in the world. I have huge respect for what they do, but for me, at the time, the work was way too numbers-driven, and I had a mantra running through my head that I didn’t know what to do with: “People, not numbers.” One day the head of the firm said he’d heard that I was doing a good job of coaching a couple of the portfolio company CEOs. I didn’t know anything about coaching at the time, but the penny dropped - coaching is about people, not numbers - and that’s what led me to train as a coach.
