Building Devin but it works. Prev. CERN, Sana Labs, Depict.ai (2x top YC company).

This weekend I spent time and learnt a founder story that was so unique + unexpected I feel I have to share. From Sidar who built a unicorn + a startup ecosystem. His humbleness honestly left me 10x more inspired 🙏, highlights: - Background: Sidar hated university calculus, went on to do Telco tech support, was a tech journalist (-> fired for prioritizing concerts over work), and then founded Peak. - Culture: Sidar emphasized evolving company processes and the products over short-term goals. Talking about this every day to make it core of the culture. - Making Peak profitable and selling for $1.8bn wasn't the goal, creating an ecosystem for operating tech startups was. - As a testament to strong culture and team: After selling to Zynga, former Peak employees started their own companies, ALSO becoming worth billions of dollars and surpassing Peak 🤯 Hiring wise: - Sidar took almost 1000 interviews per year. Set the expectations: - The company will almost certainly fail. - But, we will succeed in building an ecosystem that will last longer than the company. "If this motivates you, you should probably join, otherwise don't" - Product: Everyone having deep product awareness is one of the most important things One key thing to build product intuition in their case: "running ABs". - Crucially, AB test metrics should reflect product quality. I.e. retention – not revenue/conversion rate (both shorter term objectives). Specifically, Peak's products had orders of magnitude better retention than competition, and monetization was always second priority and "easy" if you have a good product. - On the talent side, Sidar found giving leadership to junior people, less than 3 years of experience, for marketing and product roles worked really well. He ended up only picking people with engineering backgrounds, despite not being an engineer himself. Sidar immediately struck me as a super kind and calm person. Not a high intensity executor. Also one of the most generous people I met. Example: he was the only person at Peak with equity, but he decided to distribute a huge amount of the $1.8m to team after the exit. My takeaway - By focusing on constant evolution and building a supportive culture, you can not just achieve your dreams but help countless others do the same. True leader.
