I terminated this interview after 7 minutes. Am I The A-hole? “What do you think of our website?” I asked the candidate. “I’ve not looked at it.” I maintained my poker face but frowned on the inside. Not good, especially for a dev. “What's the name of your company?” he asked. My eyebrow went up of its own accord. “You can’t remember, or you didn’t know?” “I didn’t know. Is that a problem?” He was genuinely puzzled. “Do you know what we do?” “No.” “Ok, thanks for your time.” This was pre-COVID, pre-remote working days, and experienced developers were in really short supply in the North-West of the UK. Perhaps he knew how much we needed him. Whatever. Call me old fashioned but when I were a lad… interview prep meant knowing the company inside out, its history, its values etc etc. Also, an incisive question or three ready for the bit at the end when they say “Do you have anything to ask us?" Anyway... He was shocked when I ended the conversation, and relayed his displeasure to the recruitment consultants. I still have no remorse in ending it there and then. But it’s a vivid reminder, even today, of how someone’s values can be light years removed from your own. Something that's so alien I couldn't have imagined it before seeing it with my own eyes. Yet to them, it’s as natural as the birds and the bees. What would you have done? Is this a generational thing (he was 26, me 40)? Am I out of touch to expect candidates to care about where they’re going to work? PS. When has someone done or said something that made you question reality?

Do you work remotely? How about this! I had an interview scheduled for 12:15 pm yesterday and I had to prepare for it. So I had to wake up early and prepare enough for the day and do the necessary things before the interview. While preparing a thought dropped in my heart and I waved it, the thought was how are you going to dress for the interview? I know you do reply as I did, I said "Dress up for an online interview?" left to me I would have just attended in my normal casual. Mind you I was to give access to my camera, No distractions, and a quiet place at that, So that prompted the thoughts of actually dressing like it. It was hilarious but I did it, and I learned from it. I would have just opted to dress like I'm in my house but what about first impression even though it's an online interview? Whatever we find our hands-on let's always indulge to do it well How do you put yourself out there? What about portraying quality and value in your products and services, I know you work remotely, but what about rendering your services as if you work from an office where you are under supervision? Learn to inculcate the virtue of working smartly and effortlessly. Don't bring down your values but let them stand you out. Hilarious😂? But I hope you got value. Let's know in the comments. It's impossible to address a problem you don't know exists. In my early days as an owner, I must admit, I lacked the guts to conduct exit interviews. But as I matured as an operator, I quickly realized that exit interviews/surveys are a goldmine of priceless insights. The info you need to hear, but don't always want to hear. Today, I strongly urge my clients to embrace them wholeheartedly with every team member that is departing. Here is a formula that has been producing killer insights: a) Keep it simple- limited questions – stick to five or less. The more you ask, the less valuable the feedback (or none at all). b) Act swiftly – conduct the exit interview within one business day of the resignation. c) Make it easy. Whether it's a quick text message or a link to a survey tool. The more steps, the less data. Lead with your heart- breaking up is hard and this could be viewed as an opportunity to dump on the company OR provide some meaningful feedback about a place they invested a piece of their life in. I encourage my clients to accompany the exit interview/survey with a cover note from the owner or a key person in the business. This note should emphasize how much their feedback is appreciated and how it will contribute to improving the work environment for all. Here are some examples of questions that have proven to yield essential data: 1. What was the number one reason for your decision to leave? 2. What do you like the most about working here? 3. If this was your business what would you fix or do first? 4. On a scale from 0 to 10, how likely would you be to recommend a friend or family member to work here? (0-10) 5. What's the most critical reason for your rating above? We want to understand the reason behind the number. Brace yourself for early results and the occasional person blowing off steam but you will soon notice patterns and trends that need to be dealt. Reflecting on a recent pre-interview experience I had, I felt compelled to share some observations that left me pondering. As I joined the virtual session, I was eager to learn more about the company culture – after all, it's a vital part of any workplace. However, the presentation seemed to focus solely on this aspect, leaving little room for discussions about other important factors like diversity, benefits, and the role itself. There also seemed to be some confusion about the interview process, which understandably left many of us feeling uncertain about what to expect next. Clarity and communication are so important in these situations. And there was a little 'hint' of requirement for employees to attend daily early morning briefings (mind you, it's very, very early), which raised questions about work-life balance and flexibility – something that's incredibly important to many of us. I share these thoughts not to criticize, but to spark a conversation about the importance of transparency and communication in the hiring process. After all, it's through these discussions that we can learn and grow together. Let's ensure that we're transparent and upfront with candidates about the interview process, expectations, and company culture. Clear communication can help build trust and rapport from the start.
