This week on Sinica, I interviewed the three winners — two individuals and one team — of the 2023 Schwarzman Capstone Showcase at Schwarzman College in Beijing. These remarkable young scholars did truly first-rate work that will be fascinating to anyone interested in China. Hear Shawn Haq share his findings on the way Chinese and American policy analysts understand cross-Strait relations; Corbin Duncan discuss the social and economic impact of the One-Child Policy and its creation of a generation where a great many never had siblings; and Kelly Wu and Manthan Shah talk about their work on decarbonization of the steel, aluminum, cement, and chemical sectors in Shandong Province. Amazing stuff.

On Friday, #BritishScienceWeek began 🧪 Being a Life Science Recruitment Company we are proudly marking the occasion with a daily science quiz amongst our employees. It's safe to say, it's getting competitive. As well as having fun, it's also important to recognise what #BSW represents. British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of all things science, technology, engineering and maths. This year's theme is something Ricky Martin and the team are very passionate about: 'Smashing Stereotypes'. The ultimate goal of this year's theme is to "challenge long-standing stereotypes, with the aim of encouraging more young people, from all backgrounds, to see themselves as scientists". As science evolves, there are more and more opportunities to join the science industry. BSW will help to smash the stereotyping in science and encourage all young people, regardless of their backgrounds to embrace science. This will hopefully see an increase in promising young scientists working in a sector which impacts us all. Who knows, in years to come we could be placing a young science professional into work who was inspired by BSW. To find out more about British Science Week, read our latest blog below. 🔬 #ScienceWeek #Recruitment Ricky Martin David Powell FREC Ben Hamlin Ben Vicentuan Chris Amey FCCA Hayley Swords Eve Hegarty BSc MIRP CertRP Greg King CertRP

Our co-founder, Pedro Resende, recently participated in a dynamic panel discussion on Academic vs Non-Academic Science Careers at the Hello Bio LabLife Conference. Pedro highlighted the importance of making informed decisions when it comes to career paths in STEM. His advice? 💡 Talk to a diverse range of individuals, including those who have stayed in academia and those who have ventured into non-academic roles. Seek guidance from supervisors, mentors, advisors, counsellors and coaches, is key to navigate your career journey effectively. 💡Pedro also advocated for a growth mindset, stating: "You need to be constantly willing to improve not only yourself, but also to have the mentality to fully embrace the project you are working on, or the team you are working with, and want to improve them too." 🚀 You can check the insightful contributions of Samuel Dada and Danielle Tomasello in the Hello Bio article linked in the comments. Day 9 Another great day at the Arkansas Summer Research Institute! Today we had visiting professors from various institutions. We did machine learning with Dr. Afsana Mou, building a better LinkedIn profile with Dr. Holden & Dr. Krakowiak, building your resume with Julie Larue, and a wonderful panel for research and Grad school opportunities moderated by Dr. Krakowiak. What is one thing you learned during the panel discussion today? One thing I learned during the panel discussion is to have boundaries and a work-life balance. #ArkansasSRI

Thanks, Christine Johnson, for your kind words! I encourage any entrepreneur/founder to stack I-Corps with a relevant accelerator. I-Corps will help you validate key assumptions about customer segment to be served, value proposition and go to market. Taking validated learning from I-Corps into an accelerator equips founders to gain far more from the accelerator experience and, most importantly, know what they need to do to get their early investors and acquire their first customers.
I want to thank all who participated in our I-Corp interview process so far - it’s been extremely insightful and while the program is over we will continue conversations through the spring and we will be applying for the national I-Corp program to further our market research. I’m beyond grateful for the invaluable structure and feedback provided by Polsky Center at the University of Chicago. Especially from our mentors Ellen Zatkowski and Larry Schor. The spring cohort applications are live! If you are a new startup or a scientist with a unique idea you want to test in the market I strongly recommend this program. Teams including faculty, students, staff, and alumni from the University of Chicago Argonne National Laboratory, Fermilab, the Marine Biological Laboratory, and Chicago-area universities are eligible. Apply here:
