Industrial heritage. Slovenia is one of those ten places in the world that I would like to visit soon, now also to go see Cukrarna in Ljubljana. A former sugar refinery, built in 1828 and later destroyed by a fire, it subsequently became a tobacco factory, a textile factory, a military barracks, and a shelter for the homeless. It is an important cultural symbol of the nation. The architecture firm Scapelab won the international competition for the design of the building in 2009 with the idea of completely renovating the structure, preserving only its historic shell and converting it into a multifunctional space for contemporary art. Cukrarna, with its gigantic dimensions, represents a revolutionary space in Ljubljana's cultural infrastructure. It is a modern center for art and culture that attracts many visitors with its long-term programming of exhibitions and events. 🥂 A little more lighthearted #culturalheritage after deep debates on the origin of indigenous art yesterday. There' is both lots to reflect on and lots to enjoy in this piece in The Conversation Australia + NZ by Garritt C Van Dyk from the University of Newcastle. The story of Dom Perignon is widely known but this suggests that it is was the representatives of perfidious Albion (England) who added the bubbles. Whether your interest is in how myths grow, how cultures are defined or in how #innovation happens, there are lessons here. It shows how innovation comes when you embrace alternatives, but use your constraints (the need for timber for the maritime fleets) as a spur to innovation. It demonstrates the power of #storytelling firstly in the Dom Perignon legend, but also in the role of natural second fermentation as a proxy for terroir (or placemaking) and it reminds us how cultures can interact. Originally from Santiago Matatlán, Juan Carlos Méndez Zamora comes from a rich history of mezcal production—his family started crafting the spirit in 1795 and in the 1980s their brand El Cortijo was exported to France, becoming the first mezcal brand to be sold outside of Mexico. For Juan Carlos, the growing global reach of mezcal is only one part of the equation. "One thing is to commercialize and another is to educate," he explains. This stance is at the center of his work. In addition to El Cortijo, he and his brother, Raúl Méndez Zamora, opened El Cortijo La Mezcalería to teach friends, locals, and supporters about the production and heritage of mezcal. Casa Cortijo soon followed with guided tours of maguey crops, agave trails, and palenques and El Cortijo Cocktail Room exists as a space to enjoy all the spirit has to offer. His goal is clear. "Personally, as a brand and a family business, it's about safeguarding and preserving traditional artisanal mezcal, as it should be done. Essentially, when someone says they want to try a mezcal, it should taste like Oaxaca, like Mexico primarily. It should embody our customs and traditions. So the goal is to preserve that because otherwise we might lose it." When we talk about Alvarinho, it is impossible not to associate it with Palácio da Brejoeira. But, what is this place? Palácio da Brejoeira is one of the largest wine producers in the region. HPC is a pledge, a promise to deliver always authentic products, cigars handmade in Honduras with Honduran aged long filler tobaccos. The authentic flavors of tobaccos grown in Honduras, through the shape of elegant cigars rolled by genuine artists in Danlí’s factories, respecting local culture and traditions of cigar making. Such craftsmanship can only be found in the land that brought the cigar smoking rituals to humanity thousands of years ago, in the Mayan settlements of Western Honduras. Such tobaccos also could only come from the very same Honduran land, from Copán to Jamastran and from Talanga to Azacualpa, these valleys produces some of the most flavorful and aromatic tobaccos ever found on earth. Barrel Sizes Around the World 🌍 In our Budapest facility, we craft barrels ranging from the little 110 liters all the way up to the monumental 6000 liters. The category of "standard" barrels includes sizes from 225 liters to 5 hectoliters. Those larger than this are referred to as "Casks", which are entirely unique, from the doors on them to the taps. Interestingly, different regions of the world have preferences for different barrel sizes. In Bordeaux, the 225-liter barrels are favored, while in Australia it's the 3-hectoliter barrels, in Italy the 5-hectoliter ones, and in Austria and Germany, the casks are the most sought after. This year, Charles Symington of Symington Family Estates in Portugal succeeds Véronique Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin in France as PFV President for the period July 2024 to June 2025.
