Embedding our journey to net zero strategy in our entire value chain is a proven successful concept. Every contribution takes us one step further on our journey.
Reducing emissions from sourced raw materials is one of the most effective ways to achieve Essity’s goal of Net Zero emissions by 2050. Since 2016, we have already been able to save over 240,000 tonnes of CO₂ from sourced raw materials, a reduction of 16%, and with recycled, renewable, and alternative materials we are continuing to improve that figure every day. A very important part of our journey to net zero is to identify and shift to climate smart materials and one way we do that is to work closely together with our suppliers to reduce the footprint of sourced materials.
By the end of 2022, an impressive 80% of the plastic utilized in our packaging originated from renewable or recycled sources. This week we’re marking a big moment in our sustainability journey with the arrival of 50 new state-of-the-art biomethane trucks into our transport fleet! The trucks will immediately replace 50 diesel units, cutting down tailpipe carbon emissions by up to 90%. The biomethane fleet will be operated by Tesco’s transport partner DHL Supply Chain and the trucks will be used to transport produce to our 177 stores from our distribution centres in Dublin. Biomethane is a renewable energy source produced from organic waste, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
